ivtec has continuous cam phasing thru the entire powerband, I believe whereas vtec has a high lobe and a low end lobe.

i'm far from an expert on the technical aspects, but i can tell u that i-vtec has a much smoother response, as opposed to a normal vtec roaring to life at 6k. in other words, i-vtec is boring

i think there was a really nice breakdown in the FAQ somewhere, but now i cant find it

The reason your VTEC is roaring to life @ 6k is because you're not properly tuned. The point is a seemless transition between 1 cam profile to the next maximizing all available power at that specific RPM level. If you feel it kick, you're not running at optimal conditions.

found it. page 2 of the FAQ at the top of this forum. doesn't get as in depth about i-vtec as i thought, but i did read another article, one that came out in 2000 before i-vtec made its debut in performance cars, and the point i came away w/ is that it boosts ur mid-range torque. here's an exerpt from Jake D's post(which is not the article i mentioned):

i-VTEC

As successful as the VTEC system has been, one of the key arguments against it in comparison to competing systems is that it had only two profiles for timing and lift. i-VTEC answers the critics by introducing continuously variable timing. The valve lift is still a 2-stage setup as before, but the camshaft is now rotated via hydraulic control to advance or retard valve timing. The effect is further optimization of torque output, especially at low RPMs.

its a combo of traditional vtec and something similar to bmw's double vanos (changing of cam angles on the fly)

Well my VTEC just makes my car loud and makes all the girls go: "OOOOOOOOOO....AAAAAAAAAAAAAH." Lol.

But no seriously mine just sounds smooth and then at 5700 or 5800 RPM's the car makes a perfectly smooth transition from soft to really really REALLY loud. And what makes me wonder is that why it's louder than a person with exhaust. Cause all the noise is being made by my cold air intake and I have the stock muffler and exhaust piping lol.
