Default Starter/flywheel clearance

For the longest time I couldn't figure out why my starter was screeching after the engine started, then I read some stuff on the clearance between the bendix and flywheel and starter "shims".

The problem started after I had the sohc zc put in my 91 civic. The mechanic who did the job used the flywheel from the original engine, which has a wider radius. This has reduced the clearance between the starter and flywheel, and now the gears occasionally screech after the engine starts.

Because of the way the starter bolts into the engine, however, shims aren't going to do anything to change the clearance.

Anyone have any suggestions?
