Default ok, what's the difference?

I'm asking yet another n00b question, but i ask cause im dumb and want to learn

What exactly does a cam do?
what's the difference between like a *insertbrandhere* stage1, 2 or 3 cam?

Lift, and duration mainly. also with stage 2 and 3 cams it is neccesary to replace valvetrain items such as retainers, and valve springs. i'd even reccomend it just going to stage 1 but that's just me.

im running crower stage 2's with stock valve train.......and it still runs like a beat dog
