B20 vtec question

hey all i just got back from NC on vacation and purchased a new B20, i was told by my friend who owns the shop that if you put a STOCK B16 head, on a STOCK B20 bottom end that the valves WILL hit the pistons!!!!!!

i have never heard this before and am now concerned, is this true? i thought there was plenty of room for valves due to the low compression ratio?

any help is appreciated in advance

i have never heard of that on a b20 motor my boy has a stock b16 head on a b20 and its fine

thats what i thought too. his crx with a b20 vtec went a 12.6 all motor. and my brothers plain b20 hatch went a 13.5 with just a header! but he was saying i needed to recess or fly cut the pistons for relief, but i have seen some 12:1 comp b20s and they are on stock honda shit and dont have any problems.

thanks

I was just reading up about that combo last night, and it seems to work just fine. Im guessing you got this info from chucky

What he's saying makes sense but its not what is really going to happen...If you start messing with cams and cam timing, then you may run into problems since the Valve Reliefs in the Vtec Pistons are different than the Valve Reliefs in Non-Vtec Pistons...But in your example, stock block, stock head...You'll be fine

i may want to run a set of ctr cams but that is about it. i still think i should be okay with that much clearance?

anyone have this setup?

the valve faces on the non-vtec motors are of a smaller diameter than the vtec ones. When Honda made the stock pistons they made the valve reliefs the smaller diameter. They will be alright on stock cams if nothing is shaved but like Zee said you change cams or cam timing much then you are headed for at least some bent valves if not broken ones. CTR cams might be too much. Either way I'd still clay test on the stock cams if I put it together.
