2A Unification: What the Media Doesn’t Want You to Know

By Beth Alcazar // 07/03/2018It’s seems that the media is adamant about portraying firearms owners as older, white males. They want to perpetuate that stereotype indefinitely. They do not want you to know that our community actually has a lot of diversity and that this diversity is continuously expanding.

I have mentioned many times before that the 2A community is made up of many people of different ages, races, backgrounds, experience levels, interests and political affiliations — and that’s just barely scratching the surface. We are Christians. We are atheists. We are black and white. We are male and female. We are single, married, physically challenged, able-bodied, old, middle-aged and young. We are beginners, experts and somewhere in the middle. We are Republican. We are Libertarian. We are Democrat. In some cases, we couldn’t be more unalike. Oftentimes, when you get a group of us together, the greatest (and maybe only) common ground I can pinpoint is that we all firmly believe in our natural right to protect life.

I am especially aware of this when the incredible group of women from the D.C. Project comes together at the nation’s capital each year to represent female firearms ownership from all 50 states and speak with the nation’s representatives. This is one of the most unique groups that I have the privilege to be a part of, and I know that in any other circumstance, we may never have all come together like this. We are all so strikingly different, but what is so remarkable about this is that no matter who we are or where we come from, we always find such a powerful bond in our support of the Second Amendment. There is no doubt that self-defense and protecting our loved ones is a very important and unifying mission.

I just wish that this were something everyone in the gun community could recognize. Instead of focusing on what the media wants us to focus on, and instead of arguing about caliber effectiveness, chambered rounds and tactical reloading skills, we should take advantage of this rare and wonderful opportunity to find strength in our common goals, no matter what our value system is, what state we live in, what our aspirations are or what our careers may be. The right to keep and bear arms is our common ground, our unification. The strength that can be found in that is immeasurable.
