Stop Doing Press Checks

I'm in 99% agreement with your rationale. However, I always have and always will do a press check, NOT between every round and NOT even between every reload, but instead, anytime my firearm has not been in my care and custody (the operative circumstance), such as when it's hidden away in its regular place of concealment in the house.

Even though it is intentionally left loaded and chambered, prudence dictates that I confirm with 100% certainty the presence of a round in the chamber, so that when I pull the trigger on that all-important first round, it actually goes bang. After all, do i really want to bet my life that someone (my wife? a well-meaning relative?) hasn't stumbled upon my firearm and in my absence done me a "favor" and unloaded it?

Hey, stranger things have happened, right? And if I were in law enforcement or the military, I would do the very same thing -- again, NOT between every round and NOT even between every reload, but instead, simply to ensure that when I first go on duty (or patrol, etc.), the all-important first round actually goes bang.

In a local Walmart just a few years ago, a police officer, after several tense moments of fruitless communication with a crazed idiot (who held a rather large knife to the throat of a toddler, while threatening to slice the kids throat) was forced to rush the perpetrator and put a bullet in his noggin. Do you think Captain David Huff did a press check, first? Do you believe he SHOULD have done a press check, first? I think we both know the answer.

Personally, I'm willing to trust my gun -- and my training -- for subsequent follow-up shots. But with all due respect, for the foregoing reasons this is why I -- and others like me -- do press checks.

See: http://bit.ly/2eY1tYC And for confirmation that Captain Huff did a press check, see also: http://bit.ly/2eY4p7m "As the negotiations broke down, Huff ducked just out of sight and checked his firearm to make sure there was a round in the chamber in case he needed to take a shot." (If you'd like to second guess Captain Huff's decision, be my guest.)
