Default 84 Monte Carlo rear end upgrade question.

I have a 84 Monte Carlo and im looking for a good rearend upgrade from the stock 7.5. My question is, what rearends are a direct bolt it? I know my way around Camaro's and Mustangs, but haven't gotten my hands into a Monte Carlo yet.

Thanks,
Miles.

Didnt get rid of the stang did you Miles? Anyway a GN rear or a T-type rear is the only direct bolt in that will be the proper width and thats the 8.5 10 bolt. Those can get pretty pricey but if you look around on some G-body forums im sure you could score one for around 600ish. Also a 12 bolt or 10 bolt from an A-body car will bolt in but you will need different rims because the rear is wider. also need a set of control arms that TRZ sells... ICEMAN also sells the A-body swap upper control arms on ebay for about 200 or so...There are also several other kits that will put a 12 bolt or ford 9 inch on the car, one is made by BMR, but they can get expensive. If you dont plan on beating the shit out of the car with a new posi unit the 7.5 should hold up to about 350hp, but if its getting beat on all the time and dead hooking it will be short lived.

Nope. I Still got the coupe. Just since the wheels gotten stolen I bearly have any motivation to do anything to it. I did however put a cam in the motor, drop the motor and tranny in and started reassembling it. Then I realized that I could get the monte carlo running for cheaper and I need a car now so I decided to either put the mustang on the back burner or part it out. Thanks for the info tho, I knew the T-Type rear and GN rear would fit, and obviously the Monte Carlo SS rear, but none of those are really to be found at the junk yards around me so i was hoping there was another option i didnt know about. Ive also searched craigslist but it seems like everyone either has an SS minus rear, tranny and motor or they want 600 for the rear. So it looks like I'll have to take it easy on the rear for a while lol.

Well there are the Ford 9", Ford 8.8, GM 12 bolt, and GM 8.5 which are all popular upgrades. The stock rear with a little bit of upgrades can hold up to about 400-450 (i said with upgrades) With a powertrax carrier, girdled diff cover are good enough upgrades. But traction is what breaks these rears. I had a 87 SS with a 357 sbc and a 250 shot that use to run high 11's years ago and with those upgrades it held together for 2yrs untill I sold the car, I do not kno where and how it is doing now bc its been about 5yrs since I sold it but the stock Gov lock held up to running mid 12's with a 355sbc and a 150shot. Only thing that blew on that was the locking clutches so it would lock and unlock making for a scary ride.

well the car is still a orginal v6 car right now. I'm taking the vortec 350 I have in my camaro and doing work to it then dropping it in and I didn't think the v6 rear would hold for very long. I can get my hands on a ford 9 with disk brakes for cheap but making it fit and work would be the expensive part. I'm getting back $1100 from uncle sam and with what I plan on doing to the motor and interior Im hoping not to break over $1600.

check out maliburacing.com, turbobuick.com or montecarloss.com. great sites for g-body parts, finding a decent rear for $600 is gonna be a hard find, but good luck. If you are only running a mild 350 I would suggest the 7.5, much cheaper and hopefully readily available

well the V6 7.5 is the same as the SS, early TR and 442's 7.5, just different carrier as you probally have 2.73 rear gears with a 3spd trans or 3.08's with the 4spd auto
