Default torquey 305/350

i've got a pick up. an old one. I'm not 100% on the year because the truck has been pieced together over the years. I'm currently using it to tow my lawn service trailer. I'm looking to get better fuel efficiency. The truck is definatly worn out. Its got some 300,000+ miles on it. I don't know alot about these engines, let alone big carborated engines. I'm not 100% on which engine it is, the 305 or the 350. I can't tell just by looking at it. Because the trailer is rather heavy when all the equipment is on it, I'm assuming I need more torque to get better gas milage.
Any ideas as to what to do?
As always, the cheaper the better, but I am open to some bigger mods if they are worth it.
thanks

isn't that the little plastic piece that you put in your air intake that is supposed to smooth the flow of air, which inturn, allows for better air to fuel mixtures, which makes more power?
those things actually work?

seems kinds sketchy to me
