Default building a "small" sbc?

Hey guys, So I am building a little 283 for a 96 s-10 I have. I am not really looking for torque since the truck is light and has a fresh rebuilt t-5. I was planning on just bumping the compresion to about 11:1, a set of vortec heads(some valvetrain), and a cam to turn close to 7k rpm's. I've been doing a little research and have been told that the 283's bore is to small for a set or vortec heads. Now I really didn't want ot bore it, but I am guessing that I am going to have to. Summit does not sell a performace rebuild kit for this motor either? Any experiences with 283's or I'm learing towards a 302? I know I won't get the kind of power the big guys get but this is for a little truck. Small dicplacemnt and lots of rpm's?

TQ would still be more fun on the street with that 5speed.. but if not i would say do the 302... 4in bore should help the heads flow better for all those rpms

yeah, the truck is light so traction will be a problem. I eish I could find a older 327 to make me a 302. I have a friend who's father has one but I think he wants to buried with it. lol. I guess I shall bore the hell out of the 283?. Hoping for about 325 at the rears?

the small main journal blocks witch where 327 where from 62 to 67 i believe.the only problem with them is that the mains wont take alot of hp ...so if your going to go over 500 i would put some billet caps on it and maybe fill it to the freeze plugs...the mains are a 2.30 not a 2.45 like a 350 or 327 block witch where made from 68-74.u can pick up some used nascar parts with the 2.30 main and they will be light weight so u have a stroked 327 .that would rev crazy fast because the crank would be only around 38# vs stock one witch are around 60#

305's/350's are so plentiful, I wouldnt waste your time with the 283, yeah it will be quick for the s-10, but atleast do a 305, there is a guy giving one a way in the GM For Sale section.

Well I would go with a 350 if I had more money to drop into it. I am not using big money parts so they are more likely to break like my trenny. It is a fresh rebuilt T-5. They can't handle much torque, atleast the ford ones couldn't. So I have a 5-speed that does not like a 350 and some 4.11 gears. So why don't I just rev a lsmaller motor? I have a steel crank 283 for free. I can bore it to 301 or find a early 327 block and make a real deal 302. My understanding is a 283 crank is better for reving than a 305. This is just a beater truck to haul motors and stuff from the house. Including 96 s-10, camaro 16's, rebuilt T-5, and a 283 I have about $800 in a clean s-10 so far........

I would look into a 327 than, those are nice, for high RPM's.

i aint going to lie to u.you really are better of just doing a 350 or 327..u say the engine make to much tq for the trans..well swap cams out..u can get cams that are more for hp or ones more for tq..i dont know how well u know engines or what your total hp&tq goal is for this..i reved my 327 to 7500rpms alot and i also made 2.2 hp for the engine witch is really un heard of with the parts i used
