I have always heard it was an honest 8-10 horse gain. I have been wanting to do mine for awhile and now you got me all screwed up.

i had an electric water pump on my firebird, i loved it simply because my car never went above 180 degrees..
it might be good for 2-3 hp but not 8-10. i dont know how the water pumps work on ls1s but my lt1 water pump was cam driven, of course the more free-moving the cam is, the less parasitic loss in power you will experience, same with belt driven pumps like on sbc's but the gains are tiny.

Like they said, stick with mech. I would go all out and get a good brand if I was gonna do it. CSI.

Pros : constant speed pump promotes better cooling, if your turning enough RPM's to cause it with a mech. pump you'll have no cavitation worrries.

Cons : More wiring to cause problems, possible electric motor failure at inopportune time. Mechanical pump fails at the seal, weeping coolant but continues to move coolant, electric does not.

Its a first gen block. I wanted the electice pump to keep my water temps down wile in traffic and to help cool down, aslo if I ever do more engin work or turbo will help cooling alot.
It probly would have been a good idea for me to post my reasons why.
I never thought about pump failure till now though, with this being said it would be better to stick with mech pump
