Default I need some gm tranny opinions

A good friend of mine is getting ready for a 383swap into an s-10. He is hoping for 400hp on the motor and plans on spraying it as well later down the road. I can't remember what number he's looking for on the spray. Let's just guess 650hp to be safe. Now he is putting an automatic in it and is hearing alot of different opinions from everyone. I would like to know what tranny you guys would reccommend. He was looking at 700r4, then turbo 400, then turbo350. He wants the tranny built so it can handle the power reliably (or as reliable as 650hp can be). What would you guys suggest? Also if you guys know of any good places to get these trannies at a good price? Thanks in advance guys.
John

How much street/highway use is it going to see?

For a weekend warrior with occassional street use I would reccomend the th350.

If it sees a lot of use you might want a built 700r4.

Depends on how much it is going to be driven on the street, how many gears it will need.

i used to drive my el camino back and forth to work with a turbo 350 with a manual valve body in it. that transmission is actually for sale. if he plans on going with any more horsepower then that, i would go with either a turbo 400, or a glide. call Steve at CRT transmissions at 556-0090. He built a turbo 400 for me that will handle 800+ hp.

Use the TH400, it's the big brother to the TH350. It's just bigger and better. Virtually bulletproof.
