Unhappy Clutch gone... need some suggestions

my stock clutch is gone....it was replaced 2 yrs ago must have more torque than i thought. now i need to get a new clutch and am really lost as to what i should do. money is a problem right now, but i also dont want to get a cheap/shitty clutch or a used one only to go out again in a year or 2. im thinking about getting a new lt4 clutch setup but i dont think the clutch would work on an lt1, just the pressure plate will. or i have also seen some used clutch sets on camaroz28.com. some Spec III sets, centerforce, mccleods and some stock clutches with upgraded pressure plates. i remember hearing that most clutches for lt1's are no good... also, my stock flywheel has already been resurfaced once. i have heard it would be just fine if i resurface it again and also heard that i should get a new flywheel everytime i get a new clutch....

this is for a '96 Z28. Any help would be great. and if anyone does this kind of work, please post what u charge...keeping in mind that i would help if needed.

One of my boys could do it for you cheaper than any shop.... if he wants too..
LT4 clutches will work fine... thats what im using. I would only recommend the LT1 clutch, LT4 clutch, SLP clutch with their flywheel, and McCleod. But you wont have the cash for a McCleod. All the others use the LT4 pressure plate and design their disks themselves.
I would not resurface that flywheel again.. if its been done once then u need a new one. Some people say its ok if its only been shimmed x hundreth of an inch but i wouldnt do it.

I know that this was said to you on a different board, but have you considered any of the mcleod cluthes? I know that they are a bit pricey, but the rev-lock is not a bad clutch and for the money is not a bad deal. You could try the lt4 clutch or even one of the specs. I have an ls1 and have had a spec stage 3 carbon fiber one in the car for a year and all has held up well. I heard horror stories about them also, but have been happy up until now. Hope it works out for you, good luck in your endeavors.

isnt the SLP clutch set simply an lt1 disk and lt4 PP? how much am i looking at for an SLP clutch set w/flywheel? i want the best clutch set i can get, even if i have to save money by doin the install by myself. but im sure i wont have to. i have 1 or 2 people who would help me do it and they know how to work under cars. i read on camaroz28.com that Advanced Auto Parts sell an lt1 clutch with lt4 PP set as well for somewhere around $199...im goin now to SLP's website to check out thier clutches and also call AAP and see whats up. thanx for all the responses guys!!!

I would look into getting a Stage 1 or 2 Spec Star clutch. I got a Stage 2 in my LS1 and it works great. Feels like stock and I have yet to hear any chatter. The only noise I get from it is sitting in neutral with the clutch let out you can hear the disk skipping off of the flywheel and that aint shit for the holding power that it provides. Also Spec clutches come with a flywheel so thats a plus and they are worth the money. Heres a link.

Get a custom one made.

Bay City Clutch or Fleetpride are two I know of.

You specify the vehicles weight and power and what type of friction material you want. I picked up a custom clutch from Fleetpride for $258. The pressure plate is 400lbs heavier than stock. The disc is a dual friction (organic/ceramic). The closest thing in an off the shelf application would have cost another $100. They can also rebuild your current clutch.

i dont really want to rebuild my current clutch. im looking at buying an lt4 clutch setup, or at least something that can hold at least 450 torque, since my car is not gonne be completely stock next year with maybe a lil n2o. did u get a custom clutch disk for $258, or the set (clutch disk, pressure plate disk and flywheel)? do have have the number for either of these places? that would help a lot. and what kind of car did u put this on?

The $258 was the dual friction disc and pressure plate. I did get my flywheel turned down as well.

I have been through two off the shelf clutches and not been really happy. Like I said, you specify the use of the clutch. They can build anything you want.

The car? Just a weak little 306 with a few aftermarket goodies, and a T64E hair dryer.

Oh yeah, the number is in the book for both.
