Faith-Based Organizations Are Helping Communities Recover After Hurricane Florence

Lorraine Jenkins returned to her home of 34 years to find it flooded with 18 inches of water.Thankfully, volunteers from Samaritan’s Purse were nearby and ready to help. While speaking with the president of the organization, Franklin Graham, Jenkins shared her story and mentioned that she “had faith but needed a little more strength.”In response, Graham and several volunteers gathered around her to pray for her to be blessed with more strength. With tears coming to her eyes, Jenkins thanked them.Stories like Jenkins’ demonstrate the special and indispensable role that faith-based groups play in disaster relief. In the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, faith-based organizations like Samaritan’s Purse are already making a difference in affected areas.

Faith-based groups don’t just deliver material support. They are in a unique position to address the full range of human needs—physical, emotional, and spiritual—in times of crisis. This can make all the difference for people like Lorraine. As of Sept. 26, Salvation Army was operating out of more than 50 mobile and stationary service locations between South Carolina and North Carolina. It is serving people in the hundreds of thousands—as of Sept, 26, it had provided over 240,000 meals, 188,000 drinks, 128,000 snacks, and 290 cleanup kits. But it didn’t stop there. Volunteers provided emotional and spiritual care to over 15,000 victims. Salvation Army also keeps chaplains on hand so that victims can talk to someone about their recent loss. Faith-based groups can tend to all of the needs of victims—including the emotional and spiritual dimensions of their suffering.

Faith-based groups also partner with local, state, and federal government actors to maximize relief efforts. For example, Convoy of Hope positioned truckloads of supplies on the North Carolina border days before Florence made landfall. Its forward-thinking enabled it to enter Wilmington, North Carolina, one of the areas hit hardest by Florence, before roads shut down. There Convoy of Hope delivered supplies to the North Carolina National Guard and Emergency Management officials while assisting locals. Convoy of Hope also mobilized teams in Raleigh and Raeford, North Carolina, and the impact was remarkable. As of Sept. 25, over 1,600 volunteers had served over 40,000 people.Similarly, when roadways in North Carolina were flooded, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief stepped in to serve meals to those who could navigate the roads and helped the American Red Cross to pack vehicles of supplies for local shelters. When faith-based groups are part of the response plan, the government is better equipped to meet the needs of victims.

Oftentimes, faith-based networks utilize the proximity of local houses of worship and other religious groups to the local community in order to reach those in need. The United Methodist Committee on Relief, for example, invests in training people to know what to do when disaster strikes. The Methodist North Carolina Conference was prepared for Florence with over 770 people in local churches trained in emergency response. In addition, it sent over 1,000 health kits to local shelters and 1,000 cleaning kits to North Carolina so residents could begin to rebuild immediately. Faith-based groups also help disaster victims to recover long after government actors leave the area.

Samaritan’s Purse’s 1,500 volunteers assisted 130 families through three hurricane relief bases—and their work has only just begun. Teams are now “assisting homeowners with cleanup in a variety of ways—tarping roofs, clearing debris, chainsawing downed trees, and doing mud-outs,” all out of a commitment to the organization’s religious mission. Their Hurricane Florence homepage states: “Our task is to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus to those in need in the hardest hit areas.”We can anticipate that faith-based organizations will stay in affected areas as long as it takes to get them back on their feet. In fact, faith-based groups are still providing support in areas affected by last year’s hurricane season. The Salvation Army is still assisting victims in Puerto Rico who lost their livelihoods to Hurricane Maria and plans to remain in the area for a decade. Convoy of Hope also plans to remain in Puerto Rico through 2019. These groups continue to play an indispensable role in long-term recovery efforts.

The work of these faith-based groups in times of crisis is an important reminder that the freedom of religion extends to the public square. In fact, religion contributes an estimated $44 billion in charity to our country. When Americans are free to act on their faith, the whole nation benefits. That’s why Congress took action last year to ensure that houses of worship ravaged by disasters can receive disaster relief and get back to serving their local communities.Faith-based groups have an indispensable role to play in disaster response and recovery. The aftermath of Hurricane Florence is bleak, but these organizations are a ray of hope and deserve our support.

Monger beats minimum cockpit exit time, eyes FIA F3 move

By: RACER Staff | November 26, 2018 12:18 PM British driver Billy Monger, who lost both legs following a racing crash in 2017, made another move toward advancing his career by demonstrating the ability to extract himself from a Halo-equipped Formula 2 car.Monger has driven in British F3 this year for Carlin Racing, taking multiple pole positions and finishing sixth in points. Although he indicated in September he might opt to switch to North American racing and the Road to Indy for next year, the 19-year-old appears to see F3 as his preferred option, if the necessary funding can be secured.

In the video he shared on social media, Monger exits the Carlin F2 car in under three seconds. FIA regulations dictate that all drivers must demonstrate the ability to get out of their cars in under eight seconds. The new FIA F3 series, which introduced its new spec chassis at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, is set to replace GP3 as the undercard on F1 weekends next year.

Dwyer, who lost a leg and suffered multiple other injuries in an improvised explosive device attack in Afghanistan, Dwyer races to remember
35 sharessharetweetemail
By: MazdaMotorsports.com November 27, 2018 10:41 AM Former Marine Staff Sgt. Liam Dwyer knows how to win. He won a Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner race with Tom Long on Memorial Day weekend in 2014 and another the following season with Andrew Carbonell at Laguna Seca. But his latest race wasn’t so much about winning as it was about healing.“The Race of Remembrance has brought a lot of memories back to me and honestly changed who I am a little bit,” says Dwyer, who lost a leg and suffered multiple other injuries in an improvised explosive device attack in Afghanistan. “It’s not about racing, it’s about remembering those who have served and using racing as a tool to help with your recovery. I went over there with Operation Motorsport, with a bunch of other veterans from Canada and Great Britain and the United States, to team build and use this race as a way to help us recover.”The endurance race, which was run Nov. 10-11, is put on by UK organization Mission Motorsport. It’s a 12-hour race broken up into segments. Six hours on Saturday – “1,500 hours to 2,100 hours,” as Dwyer frames it – then restarted at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 – Veterans Day in the U.S., Armistice Day in Europe, and the anniversary of the day that World War I ended – then stopped again at 10:45.

Default Elliott named NASCAR’s most popular driver

Elliott named NASCAR’s most popular driver

44 sharessharetweetemail
By: Kelly Crandall | November 30, 2018 6:09 AM Chase Elliott has been named the National Motorsports Press Association Most Popular Driver Award in the NASCAR Cup Series.Accepting the award Thursday night during the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Awards in Las Vegas, Elliott succeeds Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s streak of 15 consecutive MPD awards. Earnhardt retired last season and was not eligible, bringing predictions of Elliott being next in line for the award.Earnhardt Jr. announced Elliott as the winner. Elliott also follows in the footsteps of his NASCAR Hall of Fame father by taking home of the honor. Prior to the start of Earnhardt Jr.’s streak in 2003, Bill Elliott won the award in 2002, which was his 16th overall. The last time a driver not named Earnhardt (Dale Jr. or Dale Sr., who won the award posthumously in 2001) or Elliott won the MPD Award was 1990 with Darrell Waltrip.More NASCAR!

2019 can’t come soon enough for Hamlin

The National Motorsports Press Association’s Most Popular Driver Award is determined solely by a fan vote each season.“Definitely is an honor,” said Elliott. “Somebody asked me earlier about it, what it would mean? It’s always hard to say what it would mean when you don’t know, but definitely an honor. But I think beyond all that, just seeing the fire at the racetrack and how fired up people were to see me and my team do good throughout the season, and all the hats and t-shirts. That to me is probably the biggest piece of it.” Elliott also won MPD in 2014 and ’15 while competing in the Xfinity Series.

Eligibility for the award requires a driver to compete full-time in one of the three NASCAR national series.

The Most Popular Driver Award has been presented annually since 1953.
