Max Root, a 17-year-old driver from Rancho Santa Fe, California, is the 2018 recipient of the IMSA Hurley Haywood GT3 Scholarship, which he will use toward a full-season ride in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama season with Wright Motorsports.
The scholarship is provided by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), with support from Porsche, Yokohama, Sonic Tools, OMP and RACER Magazine is worth nearly $70,000. Last year’s inaugural recipient of Hurley Haywood Scholarship, Jake Eidson with Kelly Moss Road and Race, went on to win the Platinum Cup Championship in the 2017 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.
“On behalf of IMSA, we offer hearty congratulations to Max Root as our 2018 IMSA Hurley Haywood GT3 Cup Scholarship recipient, and also to Wright Motorsports for securing Max’s driving services this season,” said IMSA President Scott Atherton. “Max has some big shoes to fill in 2018, as Jake Eidson set the bar high last year with his championship-winning performance, but there is no question Max is another rising star in our sport. We are grateful to our entitlement and presenting partners – Porsche and Yokohama – as well as OMP, Sonic Tools and RACER Magazine for their continued support of this important and beneficial program for aspiring young racers.”
Racers between the ages of 16 and 25, with no previous full-time Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama experience, are eligible to earn the scholarship. Successful candidates must have a strong desire to compete in the series, outstanding previous race results and proven on-track potential in junior racing categories, and the ability to build a compelling business plan for securing the remaining funding needed to compete in a full season of the IMSA-sanctioned Single-Make Series.
Root rose through the ranks of motocross and UTV racing before shifting his focus to sports car racing. Last year, he participated in the Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA, winning in his first series start at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willow, California and adding a second victory at Circuit of The Americas en route to second in the 2017 Diamond class championship.
He finished on the podium in all 16 races in the 2017 championship, and makes his Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama debut at Sebring International Raceway on March 14-17 as part of the prestigious Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring event, kicking off the eight-weekend, 16-round season that runs through Oct. 10-13 at Road Atlanta and the Motul Petit Le Mans weekend.
“It’s a huge blessing,” Root said. “It’s an honor, just for everything this scholarship stands for. Hurley is an amazing man. I’ve only known him for a little while, and it’s an amazing opportunity and I’m looking forward to everything it holds with IMSA, Wright Motorsports, Porsche, Yokohama and everyone involved.”
Root will receive from IMSA, with support from Porsche and Yokohama, these rewards with a combined value of approximately $70,000:
  • Full-season Premium Entry into the 2018 IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama
  • $20,000 in parts credit from Porsche Motorsport North America
  • One set of Yokohama tires for each 2018 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama event
  • Tool credit from Sonic Tools
  • Complete OMP driver suit and gloves
  • Promotional consideration by RACER Magazine
The scholarship is named after legendary sports car driver Hurley Haywood, one of the most accomplished sports car endurance racers in history. He earned five overall victories at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, three victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and two wins at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida – all in Porsches – during his remarkable driving career, which spanned five decades.
Haywood also was a mainstay of the illustrious Brumos Porsche team as a driver and a leader for more than four decades. He currently serves as the chief driving instructor at the Porsche Sport Driving School at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama.
“I am a big believer in giving back to the sport that has treated me so well, and there is no better way than by supporting up and coming drivers,” said Haywood. “Between our annual Porsche Young Driver Academy and this valuable scholarship, we are all able help attract young talent into the sports car competition arena. It was gratifying to see what last year’s IMSA GT3 Cup by Yokohama scholarship winner was able to do with the opportunity. Jake made the most of it, winning the Porsche GT3 Challenge by Yokohama championship his first year in the series. We believe we have made another quality choice with Max Root, and look forward to seeing what he can do over the course of 2018.”
Root is the second recipient of the IMSA Hurley Haywood GT3 Cup Scholarship, which was expanded in 2017 from a program IMSA, Porsche and Yokohama started in 2014. Previous IMSA Scholarship recipients were Eidson (2017), Victor Gomez IV (2016), Elliott Skeer (2015) and Michael Lewis (2014).
“At Porsche, young drivers are always a big topic of conversation,” said Dr. Daniel Armbruster, President and CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America. “Our Porsche Junior program in Europe is one well-established component, as our Porsche Young Driver Academy has taken root here in North America over the past six years. We are constantly looking for new ways to support talented newcomers like Max Root, while expanding our Porsche ladder system for drivers. Working in partnership with IMSA, Yokohama and other generous sponsors, the IMSA Hurley Haywood GT3 Scholarship is yet another way to attract and encourage new people into our sport.”
"Support of this scholarship is one of the cornerstones of Yokohama's deep commitment to motorsports and development of racing talent in North America, and we're honored to be associated with a legend like Hurley Haywood,” added Drew Dayton, motorsports manager for Yokohama Tire. “We are excited to help support Max in his first year of GT3 Cup Challenge racing, his diverse experience in racing motocross, off-road and sports cars along with his commitment to the sport make him an excellent choice for the scholarship."
The Batavia, Ohio-based Wright Motorsports team has maintained a long association with Porsche through a variety of racing series, and will field the No. 58 Porsche 911 GT3 R in the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Daytona (GTD) class for two-time and defending GTD champion Christina Nielsen and American Porsche factory driver Patrick Long – who won the 2017 Pirelli World Challenge GT championship for the team – in addition to its longstanding IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama program.
“It’s a great opportunity,” said Wright Motorsports Owner John Wright. “It’s always nice to have a driver that can run up front in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama. It’s such a competitive field. Being involved with Hurley, too, he’s always been a hero and mentor of mine, and it’s an honor just being affiliated with the scholarship. It was a little difficult seeing it go to someone else last year, because I feel like I’m a part of the Brumos family, but everybody needs to have an opportunity to do this. I’m glad Max got it this year.”

Clauson to be inducted into National Sprint Car Hall of Fame

Thursday, 11 January 2018

By RACER Staff / Image by F. Peirce Williams/LAT

Bryan Clauson is among eight men who will be inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame on June 2 in Knoxville, Iowa.
Clauson, who was 27 when he died from injuries suffered at the Belleville Nationals in Aug. 2016, was one of the sport's most popular drivers. He won 41 USAC National sprint car features and two USAC national sprint car championships. He also won the Chili Bowl Nationals, Indiana Sprint Week (twice), and after switching to wing racing he earned wins with the All Stars, National Sprint League, American Sprint Car Series and the Friday night event at the Knoxville Nationals.
Clauson is one of three drivers in the Class of 2018. Also to be inducted are Pennsylvania racer Lance Dewease, who has won at least one sprint car feature every year since 1986, and two-time USAC Silver Crown champion Dave Steele, one of Florida's most accomplished short-track racers who was killed in March 2017 in a sprint car crash in Bradenton, Florida. He was 42.
Fellow inductees include Scott Gerkin and Emmett Malloy in the owners/mechanics/builders/manufacturers/car builders category; Steve Beitler and Bob Mays in the promoters/officials/media/event and series sponsor category; and racer/builder Oscar Dwain "Red" Garnant in the pre-1945 category.

When Dale Earnhardt passed away and Kevin Harvick took over Earnhardts number 3 car,
17 years ago.......they changed the number and Harvick was winless for 17 years.

A tradition started, that for the start of every NASCAR race,
the entire stands stood for the first 3 laps and held up 3 fingers.

That tradition lasted for 3 years.

Many stock car race winners on all types of tracks, after their victory burnout,
the race winner drove backwards around the track holding up 3 fingers to the fans.

When Dale Earnhardt passed away and Kevin Harvick took over Earnhardts number 3 car, 17 years ago.......they changed the number and Harvick was winless for 17 years.

Kevin Harvick has finally got his chance to use a victory lap to honor Dale Earnhardt.

I think the racers among us would understand.

[h=2]Kart4Kids charity event opens St. Pete weekend[/h] Monday, 05 March 2018

By Marshall Pruett

Dale Coyne Racing's Sebastien Bourdais, reigning Pirelli World Challenge GT champion Patrick Long and Mazda Road To Indy owner/promoter Dan Andersen will open the IndyCar/PWC season at St. Petersburg on Wednesday with the seventh installment of their Kart4Kids charity event.

The pro-am kart race, which was hosted at Andersen RacePark for the first six installments, has been moved to Turn 1 at the site of the St. Petersburg Grand Prix where open-wheel and sports car stars will converge late Wednesday afternoon and raise money for the Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.
The 2017 event brought in $81,000 through donations and auctions for race-worn driving gear and memorabilia.

"This year's move of the event to the actual racetrack of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the heart of downtown is amazing news," Bourdais said of his adopted hometown. "It would have never been possible without the Andersen organization and the Grand Prix, and I can't wait to see the response of the community."
A silent auction will make a variety of valuable items available to the public, including Bourdais' 2017 DCR IndyCar race suit, plus his entire Rolex 24 at Daytona race-winning suit, shoes and gloves from the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team, and more will be offered from the other drivers on hand.
"This is a massive leap forward for our seventh annual event!" said Long, who launched the Kart4Kids event in 2012 in honor of the late IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon. "As we see with IndyCar and sport scar racing, when you drop the racing culture and action into a major city center, the local response is electric. To be just a couple blocks down the road from Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital makes this story that much sweeter."
Additional details on the event can be found at https://kart4kids.com/.

In his will, a church usher donated his entire estate to the church he served for years. What the church wasn't expecting was what was inside his home.

Lundstrom will never forget her first look at the property. “It was breathtaking when I walked in,” she says. Shelves filled with scale model cars filled the foyer - then kept going. Kitchen, living room, bedrooms, family room – every available space was covered with cars. “Literally it's floor to ceiling every single room,” says Lundstrom.

Hallways, laundry room, even the bathroom walls had become display areas for the tiny cars collected over a lifetime by Dennis Erickson. For more of the story, click here: http://kare11.tv/1Rbngp1

Not giving up...the race seemingly over at that point...deploying the parachutes...

Click:

In that quarterfinal match, Kool’s flopper rattled the tires and jumped out of the groove, forcing him to lift … the race seemingly over at that point. As Burkart is powering away to a sure victory, the supercharger suddenly bangs, deploying the parachutes and leaving the Follow A Dream machine — and Burkart — powerless. Hool, realizing his opponent is in trouble, steps back on the loud pedal and runs him down with little more than fifty feet to spare. While side-by-side racing is great, it’s hard to argue that anything can top a pendulum-swinging drag race like this one where those standing on the starting line and watching in the stands are run through a ringer of emotions in a matter of seconds.

Ever seen those bumper stickers, tee shirts, and wall signs that proclaim “Never Give Up”? Well........

By: NHRA All seven Don Schumacher Racing drivers, along with team patriarch and racing legend Don Schumacher, have pledged to donate their brains to the Concussion Legacy Foundation.Schumacher and his roster of drivers signed the paperwork at the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals, making their commitment official. Approximately 3,500 former and current athletes and veterans have pledged to donate their brains for research since 2008, but DSR’s public declaration marked the first time an entire team has made the commitment.Schumacher and his cadre of drivers, who experience intense vibrations, extreme G-forces, and high-speed explosions behind the wheel of their 330-mph, 11,000-horsepower race cars, will immediately begin a comprehensive brain monitoring process to ensure an in-depth brain profile upon donation.

The signing event was part of CLF Project Enlist, a program launched this week by CLF and DSR partner, Infinite Hero Foundation (IHF), to accelerate research on traumatic brain injury (TBI), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in military veterans. IHF is a non-profit organization that combats the most difficult front-line issues – mental and physical – facing returning military heroes and their families.Through Project Enlist, CLF and IHF are conducting recruiting and outreach to the military and veteran communities to encourage participation in the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs-Boston University-Concussion Legacy Foundation (VA-BU-CLF) Brain Bank brain donation registry. The VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank is the world’s largest CTE brain bank with subspecialties in concussion, ALS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

When Schumacher heard about the program, he felt compelled to get involved and help raise awareness for Project Enlist.“Donating my brain for research to help other individuals in this world is something that I’m more than willing to do. It surprised my wife, Sarah, but she also agreed to me doing this based on its potential to help drivers, soldiers, business people and the population of the world,” said Don Schumacher, who is highly regarded as a pioneer for innovative performance and safety procedures throughout the racing industry. After hearing of his pledge, each of Schumacher’s seven drivers – Jack Beckman, Antron Brown, Ron Capps, Matt Hagan, Tommy Johnson Jr., Leah Pritchett and Tony Schumacher – followed suit, making the promise to donate their brains for the advancement of research on the effects of brain trauma in athletes and military veterans.

“I support this foundation 100 percent and was thrilled that my seven drivers agreed to donate their brains to the Concussion Legacy Foundation,” added Schumacher, who was recently named to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America’s Class of 2019.Schumacher hopes that his team’s public proclamation will help to remove the stigma associated with traumatic brain injuries and inspire others to step forward and make the commitment to pledge their brains to science.

Schumacher and the DSR drivers inked their commitments alongside more than a dozen military veterans, which included retired Navy SEALS Jason Redman, Alexander Oliver, and Morgan Luttrell, who currently serves as Senior Advisor for Veterans Relations at the U.S. Department of Energy. IHF spokesperson and NHRA mainstay Gary Linfoot, former Marine Michael Wilson and more than 20 heads of veteran service organizations which have received funding by IHF also participated in the commemorative event.

By: IMSA Wire Service July 21, 2018 2:06 PM Lime Rock Park, while famously known by drivers for its difficulty to pass, provided one of the most memorable moves and emotional victories in IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge history Saturday. The TCR class victory went to the No. 54 JDC-Miller Motorsports team with drivers Stephen Simpson and Michael Johnson, making it the first win for the group in the Continental Tire Challenge.
It was also the first professional race victory for 25-year-old Johnson, who at the age of 12 was paralyzed from the waist down in a motorcycle incident.“I have been thinking about this win, coming in professional car racing, since I broke my back,” said Johnson, a resident of Lansing, Mich. “This is all the hard work over the years coming together and everyone gets to see that. It makes me so proud that I can prove to everyone that I’m the same as everyone else and that I deserve to be here, and I love to be here.

“I’m so proud, all the talking and now showing people that I can finally get them real results. It clearly shows that it can be done and I am so proud that I can show other people, and talk to them, that dreams can come true with lots of hard work.”

After Lime Rock win, paralyzed racer Michael Johnson targets Indy 500

The win came in dramatic fashion with a last-lap pass and, ultimately, a photo finish. In the closing minutes of the two-hour race, leader Kenton Koch defended his No. 12 eEuroparts.com Racing Audi RS3 LMS against an eager Simpson in the No. 54 Audi. Simpson loomed large in Koch’s mirror until the final two laps, when he brought his Audi door-to-door with Koch’s and even briefly getting ahead momentarily before Koch slid back around into the lead.Yet Simpson’s momentum coming off the final corner and onto the straightaway heading to the checkered flag couldn’t be stopped. He ducked inside of Koch and won the drag race, ultimately beating him to the stripe by 0.066 seconds for the third closest finish in Continental Tire Challenge history.“We were both sliding around a lot and Lime Rock Park is a fantastic racetrack,” said Simpson. “I loved racing around here and I always do but there’s also not too many overtaking places apart from Turn 1, so I knew I had to try something a little bit different… I did back off the last couple corners to make sure I got a good run coming down the hill and out of the final turn. It just feels good when a plan comes together.”

Simpson, though, credits his teammate of three years and the JDC-Miller crew.“Michael did a fantastic job today, but not just today, the last couple of months,” said Simpson. “He really kicked things off and got us in a good position at the start and then the JDC-Miller Motorsports guys gave us a great car. It really was a team effort and I’m pleased to get the team and Michael’s first win in the IMSA Continental Tire Motorsports Challenge. It was an exciting end there and it was another good finish.”Simpson and Johnson have undergone several ups-and-downs together in 2018. The duo missed the first two races of the 10-round season after an incident at the Roar Before the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway in January broke Johnson’s leg and resulted in significant damage to the car.Yet the team returned to the Continental Tire Challenge stronger than ever, as Saturday’s victory for the No. 54 comes on the heels of back-to-back podium finishes at Watkins Glen International and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park earlier this month.

“It’s pretty crazy how it all worked out,” said Johnson. “It’s all the hard work we have been putting in this program is finally paying off and it just shows with the numbers and the results we have been getting. Hopefully we can keep the results coming with getting that win every time.”Koch and his co-driver Tom O’Gorman finished second, while Kuno Wittmer and Rodrigo Sales in the No. 74 Compass Racing Audi took third. The Lime Rock Park 120 television broadcast will air on Sunday, July 29 on FS1 at 3 p.m. ET.
