November 7 Art Arfons went 576 MPH at Bonneville

It's easy to look at pictures like this one of Art Arfons and his jet-powered Green Monster on the Bonneville Salt Flats and imagine there's some high-dollar engineering and technical work that went into pushing to 500 mph and beyond. What it doesn't show was that Arfons was the ultimate shade-tree mechanic, an Akron, Ohio, gearhead who started building drag racers so powerful they got him banned from sanctioned events, and who managed to scrounge jet engines the U.S. Air Force considered worthless. On this date in 1965, Arfons topped 576 mph, a record he would never beat. Hear his secret to getting a broken turbine running for not much money:

In November 1966, Art Arfons returned to the Bonneville Salt Flats to reclaim the land speed record from his rival, Craig Breedlove. Their speed duel was two years old by this point. Art had set the record three times, Breedlove five.

Each record had nearly cost Art his life, for his Green Monster jet car had a bad habit of blowing a rear tire at high speeds. To guard against this, he installed double rear tires for 1966. His goal: to better Breedlove's mark of 600.601 mph.

This footage is from Art's first two days on the Salt, November 14 and 15, 1966.

whhoowwhhho, what raw power that thing just acts like it wants to leave the ground, art arfons was a true ledgend of auto racing and turbine powered auto sports, too bad I never got to meet him always wanted to but now its too late he passed on a few years back, he was pretty old though, he was from akron ohio, also famous for the soapbox derby world national championship, and for the blimp building since even back in the days of the hindenburg, like the good year blimp and so forth.

Donald Campbell Sets Land Speed Record at 403mph (1964). Campbell was a British speed record breaker who is the only person to have set both world water and land speed records in the same year (1964). On 17 July 1964, Campbell set a new world land speed record of 403.10mph for a four-wheeled car (Class A) at Lake Eyre, Australia. He was however disappointed with the record as his Norris Brothers designed Bluebird-Proteus CN7 had been constructed to reach speeds of 500mph. Campbell went on that year to set another water speed record at 276.33mph.

Campbell was killed whilst attempting to set his 8th water speed record in 1967.

The comment I would make about this film is not so much about comparing the setting of a new World Record with previous records that have been set by other brave men, but more about the accuracy of the footage shown.
This footage appears to have been taken in 1963, which is apparent by the fact that the Bluebird CN7 has a camera mounted on its tail fin in this footage.
When Donald Campbell set the World Land Speed record on 17th July 1964 the camera had been removed and a speed sensing device had been fitted up higher, about level with the top of of the tail fin.
The unsuccessful attempt in 1963 was, however, still undertaken by a very brave man who was under enormous pressure to set a new record. It was just unfortunate that an enormous downpour of rain delayed his success until 1964.
