Frankie Muniz, star of the television show Malcolm in the Middle, recently purchased this gorgeous Shelby Daytona Coupe replica, adding it to a garage of cool cars that includes the Volkswagen Jetta from The Fast and The Furious and a SEMA Ford Explorer. He posted two images of the car on instagram, hence the stitched together photo to show the entire thing courtesy of AutoEvolution.
The actor has had an interesting career, going from teen heartthrob and Emmy Award nominee to musician and most recently to racing driver. So it’s no surprise that he’s amassing a collection of interesting cars. This one, although a replica, is a gorgeous version of what is an incredibly rare and collectible car.

The Shelby Daytona Coupe was originally built as a racer to directly challenge the Ferrari 250 GTO with just six of them seeing production between 1964 and 1965. This was when Shelby was reassigned to the Ford GT40 project to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It then became the first American constructor to win an international title at the FIA World Sportscar Championship in 1965.
This isn’t one of those original six and is likely a replica built by either Superperformance or Factory Five as they’re the two big builders of Shelby Daytona Coupe replicas. Still, it’s a pretty sweet addition to Muniz’ garage.

The Shelby Daytona Coupe, was built for auto racing

The Shelby Daytona Coupe, was built for auto racing, specifically to take on Ferrari in the GT class. Just six Daytona original coupes were built between 1964 and 1965. Shelby was reassigned to the Ford GT40 project after that to go compete at the 24 hours of Le Mans, again to beat Ferrari. Pete Brock designed the Daytona's aerodynamic bodywork, while Bob Negstad designed the car's suspension. Negstad also designed the chassis and suspension for the GT40 and the CSX 3000 series Shelby Cobra, often referred to as the "coil-Spring Cobra" chassis. Due to its slippery shape, with the same Ford 289 drive-train and chassis as the 289 Cobra roadster it was much faster at top speed.
