Lots of symbolism here, but needs to be enlarged to see it....dates on gas pumps....menu on chalk board...

This hangs in some Denny's restaurants.....one is Lakeland US98(?) just South of I-4....

Brightly lit, a roadside scene at night- maybe along a stretch of dark, desert road. A roadster parked obnoxiously between two gas pumps, as James Dean, who probably owns it, leans against the rightmost pump in his signature slouch and long black coat. On the far right, in the glass-fronted doorway, which is inexplicably darkened, Marilyn Monroe rides the pleasure of the night breeze, dress frothing above her thighs.

Yet, this is only her reflection.

Still further to the right, just within Dean's sad-eyed view, the dress floats across the composition and a long sliver of her pale leg enter the frame. Behind all this, within the yellow lit enclosure of the diner, two patrons sit, facing in opposite directions. Clark Gable sipping his coffee. Bogart holding a rumpled newspaper and a smoking cigarette. Bogart is watching the scene develop outside, by the pumps. Gable couldn't give a damn. None of them can, not really.

Are they really what they seem? Are you so sure Monroe is offering her sex as she writhes in the wind? Or is she merely offering us the image? Do we want her? Or would we rather be her? Or any one of them. These faces, these postures we know so well- icons, frozen. Chosen from among their many moments of glory. Chosen. For what? They were chosen because they met their lives with a preternatural knowledge of their fate, hanging on their celluloid enhanced bodies with the gunpowder scent of doom. They wore themselves so well, those masks that we called lives. These are the faces we chose, so as to meet eternity. Those distant expressions, deep in the vagaries of thought. Death masks. "Norma Jean's Roadside Diner". A cheap looking painting. Its kitsch screams along existential wavelengths and shakes me where I sit, in a booth, at a diner in the middle of nowhere.
