When wealthy American auto racing enthusiast Briggs Cunningham entered the 1950 24 Hours of Le Mans with a pair of Series 61 Cadillacs, a rule allowing non-standard bodywork spawned a car so outrageous the French named it "Le Monstre."
Cunningham kept one Cadillac relatively standard, but tasked a Grumman aircraft engineer with making the other as light and streamlined as possible. The result, honed in a wind tunnel normally used for crop dusters, was a slab-shaped, yet effective body that proved some 13mph faster in a straight line. But despite its slipperiness, poor traction out of corners meant "Le Monstre" was slower around a complete lap than its unmodified teammate.
Despite that, "Le Monstre" finished 11th, one place behind the other Cadillac, becoming a crowd favorite in the process. It could have been higher had Cunningham, who shared the driving with Phil Walters, heeded advice and carried a shovel in the car. He was left to rue his decision after he went off the road into deep sand and was forced to dig himself out by hand, losing more than 30 minutes in the process...

Plus, of course, there is the debut of the eye-catching Delta Wing Nissan. Through day and night, crashes, spins, mechanical problems and even loose wheels bring new twists to the race, not least the shocking crash which left Brit Anthony Davison with serious back injuries and the actions of Romain Dumas, whose brutal treatment of his stricken R18 Ultra showed just how determined the heroes of Le Sarthe are. The 1985 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 53rd Grand Prix of Endurance as well as the fourth round of the 1985 World Endurance Championship. It took place at the Circuit de la Sarthe, France, on 15 and 16 June 1985.

During Thursday's practice, Briton driver Dudley Wood in a John Fitzpatrick entered Porsche 962C tangled with the Swiss driver Jean-Pierre Frey in an Alba AR2 on the Mulsanne Straight at 200 mph (320 km/h). They crashed, and they both went over the barriers and into the trees, similar to John Sheldon's crash the year before. The impact was so hard, it even cracked the Porsche's engine. No one was killed. As a result, neither car started the race.

During qualifying, German driver Hans-Joachim Stuck recorded the fastest ever lap of Le Mans- at an average speed of 156.471 mph (251.815 km/h).

Klaus Ludwig took his third overall win, and his second in a row, in the same 956B chassis, 956B-117, which had won the 1984 race.

6-time winner Jacky Ickx finished his final 24 Hours of Le Mans in 10th place.
