Pikes Peak International Hillclimb to be closed to fans

The 98th running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will be run without spectators in attendance on August 30, the event’s Board of Directors has announced.

“For the first time, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will be staged without its loyal, enthusiastic fans lining the course and no one is more disappointed than we are,” said Megan Leatham, PPIHC executive director. “Our staff and board of directors have discussed and analyzed multiple scenarios in which our race could be staged. However, with the government-issued long-term mandates for wearing personal protective equipment, providing appropriate social distancing, and limiting the size of group gatherings, we feel it is impossible to safely host spectators at the race on August 30.”

All camping permits, practice and race ticket purchases will automatically be refunded in full.

The popular downtown street festival, Fan Fest, a kick-off event slated for Friday, August 28 has also been canceled. “For many, this is one of the highlights of the summer,” Leatham added. “It’s always exciting and packed with people. We typically welcome over 30,000 fans but in light of current government guidelines we feel it would be irresponsible to hold the event this year and if we don't please the govt, they will shut us down in this state.. The risk to our competitors, sponsors, volunteers and our fans is just too high.”

Board Chairman Tom Osborne, stated, “As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the way we all do business, we are finding ways to adapt to the new normal and will continue to monitor the federal, state and local regulations on large crowds. Despite this unforeseen challenge, our iconic motorsports event has proven its ability to adapt and endure, and it will continue to do so this summer, next year, and in preparation for the 100th Running in 2022.”

Leatham concluded, “We want to thank our amazing fans for their continued support and understanding and we really look forward to welcoming them back to the mountain in 2021.”

Vahsholtz exults in 24th Pikes Peak win, and first overall triumph

It was a great day on “America’s Mountain” for veteran hillclimber Clint Vahsholtz, who claimed his 24th victory in his 29th run up the mountain in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb — and his first overall win — with his Ford Open-Wheeler. Vahsholtz’s winning time of 9m35.490s edged out fellow Coloradoan Paul Dallenbach in another Open-Wheel entry by just 0.691s. Click here for more race details.

“I tried to execute as well as I could, but I know there was something left on the table,” said Vahsholtz after his run. “But for the most part, it was one of my top-five runs and the car performed really good. For the last three or four years (the road)’s been rough, maybe this year a little bit worse in certain spots but actually maybe a little better in other spots That’s just the mountain, you know?”

Vahsholtz’s son Codie was among those sidelined for this year’s event following the decision of race officials to eliminate the motorcycle category for safety concerns following the death of bike racer Carlin Dunne in last year’s event. The elder Vahsholtz expressed hope that the bikes will be back.

“Codie’s been helping me today, and he’s been bummed this week,” said his father. “Hopefully they can resolve the issues that happened with the bikes. I grew up on bikes — I’m a first generation motorcycle racer up here and I think they need to be here, they’ve just gotta work out the details.”

And don’t expect that long-awaited overall win to dim Codie’s father’s appetite for more Pikes Peak success, either. “Oh yeah,” he responded when asked if he would be back for a 30th run and a shot at a 25th title.

Horribly disappointing after fantastic first day Tuesday in the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3. First run off because just too fast too soon? The bumps are massive in the top section of the Hill Climb. Feel it out first?!

Veteran hillclimber Clint Vahsholtz claimed overall and Open Wheel division honors in the 98th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with his 2013 Ford Open Wheeler. In his 29th run up the 12.42-mile “Race to the Clouds,” Vahsholtz’s time of 9m35.490s edged out fellow Pikes Peak veteran Paul Dallenbach for overall and Open Wheel honors by just 0.691s.

In what was a challenging year for the venerable hill climb event, with spectators prohibited due to the COVID-19 pandemic and no motorcycles in the entry, the win by Vahsholtz was a needed emotional boost and added to a storied history for the Vahsholtz family at the “Race to the Clouds”. Since 1977 the Colorado family have had at least one family member in the race, and Clint, now 47, holds the most division and class wins at Pikes Peak of any competitor ever, with 24 wins in cars and motorcycles. But he’d never won overall — until today.

Third overall and winner in the Time Attack 1 class was David Donner, who logged a 9m356.559 in his 2019 Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport to edge Pikes Peak Hall of Famer Jeff Zwart for class honors. Zwart, fifth overall, reached the top in 9m43.921 in his Porsche 935-19.

Layne Schranz was sixth overall and winner of the Pikes Peak Open class, with a 9m45.360s in his 2018 Chevrolet SS (watch an on board video of his run below), while drifting star Daijiro Yohihara won the Unlimited class with the last run of the day among the 45 entrants, a 10m05.006s.
