If I were driving to Deals Gap, I would get on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
It starts at the NC southern border and maybe in Georgia since that's where the
Apalacian trail starts. Might as well enjoy the ride.
One September vacation, we got on the parkway around Asheville NC and went all
the way to Virginia, stopping every so often for NC BBQ. We came back the same way.
Blind curves, tunnels, scenic overlooks. It was a great vacation.
I picked September because by then the kids had gone back to school and took
their parents with them. I picked mid-week for less local traffic. Less traffic meant more fun.
I had taught my ex to drive a manual trans and we were in a modified Datsun 510 sedan.
It was the first time I had modified stock springs and it sat one exhaust pipe diameter off
the road.
The car had won the Trans-Am championship 3 years in a row. She was driving.
A BMW came up behind us on a straightaway and flashed his lights. She downshifted,
took the right lines through the turns while staying in our own lane, upshifted at the right
times, down shifted at the right times and she outran him.........pulling away until we
stopped for lunch.
We laughed, we had a good time and he wasn't the only one she outran that day.
A woman who can really drive a car is usually faster than most guys. A woman who
can drive is a real turn-on. All our friends were road racers. She thought it was a normal way to drive. I loved that little girl. I still have the car. (sigh) -Bob

I lived in Asheville for about 5 years and used to hit the BRP all the time.
Now that I'm in VA I get to attack from the other end.
