After discovering Augusta International Raceway in the process of mapping every road course in North America .lapoftheworld.com%2Fthe-map%2F&event=video_description&redir_token=B4o_1FBQRxVb5yClmNzDNLZth8x8MTU2OTIxNjk4N0AxNTY5MTMwNTg3&v=oD6grqgwfP0 , I knew I had to take a trip there and explore what was left of it before any more was demolished for housing or reclaimed by nature.



What I found there exceeded my expectations and sent my imagination running. Follow along on a brief walk around what could have been a gem of a track in the Southeast. After having put up a bounty for more evidence of Air Base Speedway, mostly as a joke, I was inundated with DM's containing articles, newspaper clippings, and photos. I sifted through the info and with some help from the people at Speed Sport Magazine, it all came together. Thanks to Justin Nguyen and Matthew Ludwigson for finding the photos and claiming the bounty!

Most NASCAR tracks have a long, well-documented history behind them and finding a few photos of them or even home video footage isn't too tall an order. However, one track, so obscure that even Racing-Reference knows next to nothing about it, sent me on a late night tangent as I tried to piece together the mystery of Air Base Speedway. #NASCAR #AbandonedTrack #NASCARhistory

I recall years ago there was a WWII airstrip South of I-4 near the St Johns River East of Orlando.
Maybe Sanford?

Around 1965-1968.....
SCCA leased it for $1 per year from the county, held driving schools, maybe autocrosses, maybe races also.
SCCA rented the airstrip for $100 per day to local clubs for autocrossing.

MacDill Sports Car Club in Tampa FL was one of those clubs.
Operation Grand Slam was the name of the one day autocross event.
I also attended SCCA driving school at that airstrip. Jack Slotag was chief Instructor.

At one point, the county (I want to say it was Osceola County...but may be incorrect on that)...
The county leased the airstrip to a phosphate company, who supposedly used it to dry out phosphate.

I never went back there again.
I still know how to get there.
I wonder what the county is doing with the airstrip these days.
Last time I saw it, there was a cable across the entrance.

This remembrance was provoked by an article that Leguna Seca is owned by Monterey County California
and how the county govt with two weeks notice, ended the track management.

Monterey is in California.
Heaven help you Californians, who have not yet left before getting screwed over by the environmental whackos
and liberals who are driving Cali into bankruptcy and creating another Cuba, Venezuela, or other collapsed
ONCE PROSPEROUS socialist/communist country.

Cali has been having cities dissolved for years due to overtaxation that caused people to flee, giving less taxes over all
which led to firing police, fire departments, and selling off city property, since the cost of running city govts could no longer be supported
when side by side with liberal overspending to buy votes.

Cali cities went bankrupt during the Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Era. Former movie star
Schwarzenegger had married into the Massachusetts Leftist, Liberal Kennedy family, who undoubtedly
gave Arnie liberal politicall advice, and got him re-elected. At some point, Schwarzenegger saw that Cali would not recover
from the liberal agenda, Arnie bailed out and several liberal democrat governors followed him.....in taking California down the tubes economically.

In 2019, liberal environmental whacko policies have caused massive California forest fires,
and to avoid getting sued, the power companies have been shutting off electricity to consumers.

Monterey County owns the Leguna Seca property.
I wonder if the county will rent Laguna Seca out to Waste Management for "processing" radioactive or other waste materials.

I'm sure that taxpayers who pay on April 15, will be subsidizing liberal Cali policies this year and for many years to come.
It looks like no one has ever looked to see if the federal taxes collected in Cali are equal to the amount of the millions
poured into Cali as grants, loans and "financial aid"......which supports the free free free programs of socialism.

Monterey County will not extend a new contract to the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula, bringing an end to SCRAMP’s management of the park that contains WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Assistant county administrative officer (ACAO) Dewayne Woods, who controls the bidding process for the Monterey-owned property, informed SCRAMP of its decision via email, stating “the county is now in negotiations with another proposer for management services at Laguna Seca Recreational Area.”

SCRAMP CEO Tim McGrane was not expecting the end of a 62-year-old relationship between the organization and its oversight of the circuit.

“This news comes as a surprise to the SCRAMP organization,” he said. “We were starting to make real progress on getting the facility and the raceway operations turned around and poised for the future, but it appears at this time we may not have the opportunity to see these plans through.

“As the existing facility operator, we were stunned by the fact that we were not provided the opportunity to discuss our proposal with the ACAO. The entire process has been unconventional, ranging from the bypassing of the County’s usual Request For Proposal (RFP) process, the announcement in mid-October requesting proposals from any interested parties with only two weeks’ notice, and complaints that SCRAMP had not met deadlines to submit a proposal when in fact a submission date had been agreed upon in May, and subsequently met, has been challenging.”

Although no leading candidates to replace SCRAMP have been named, the ACAO is known to have met or interviewed with a number of parties and individuals to lead Laguna Seca under his direction. Former bidders from the most recent contract cycle in 2017 to former Laguna Seca CEOs have been involved as the mounting effort to part ways with SCRAMP have led to the latest outcome.

1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL-1

The 1969 model year of the Corvette ZL1 was offered featuring an all-aluminum 427 cu in big-block engine that claimed to be capable of 430 hp. It propelled the ZL1 down the 1/4 mile in 12.1 seconds.

Automotive experts have long believed that only two were built (yellow and white coupes), however, a third red ZL1 was revealed in December 1969. It was purchased by a Gulf Oil engineer, who still races it occasionally.

Don Sahlman of Tampa Florida owned a new ZL-1 that he referred to as an L89 due to a carb and manifold modification.
Sahlman Seafoods is over near 20th street South of Hwy 60/Adamo Drive.

His L89 had black headers and no black nose stripe.

Don autocrossed it a few times with MacDill Sports Car Club at the Schlitz Brewery (now Yungling) on part of a paved
airport runway, North of Busch Gardens. That runway went for some distance to the East and at one time went as far as 50th Street.
