Oxygen is required for fuel to be burnt in an engine. This is usually supplied by taking in air from the atmosphere. However the air that surrounds us also contains a large quantity of nitrogen. The high temperatures found within the engine cause nitrogen to react with any unused oxygen to form nitrogen oxides [NOx].

Exhaust Gas Recirculation or EGR procedure takes some of the exhaust gases back into the intake of the engine. These gases have already been used by the engine and no longer contain very much oxygen. By mixing the exhaust gases with fresh air the amount of oxygen entering the engine is reduced. Since there is less oxygen to react with fewer nitrogen oxides are formed. This can greatly reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides that a vehicle releases into the atmosphere.

Nitrous Oxides produce pollution.

I knew that automotive book would come in handy.

Something is wrong with Fords EGR setup on the Zetec motors. The EGR opens up too quickly under partial throttle (i.e. normal driving) and causes severe stumbling/studdering/hesitation. The cure is a small vacuum reducer which makes the EGR open up slower under partial throttle. This was the best money I have spent on my car so far.

Another cure would be to remove it all together which I plan on doing eventually.

yeah all EGR systems suck--they seem to be one of the first things that will go wrong on alot of cars...and doesnt it seem like it would be un healthy for your engine??? just think of all the carbons going back into your intake getting it all messy and dirty.....

If it works right an EGR when removed might not increase performance. It depends on the system. On another note if the valve goes bad it will put excessive exhaust in and causing the stumblingsurging etc that was stated and can also cause light throttle pinging. On some cars you have to fool the computer that it still works if you take it off. Had this problem with a friends Neon when he did a engine swap. He used a block off plate for the egr but left the lines connected. The computer would throw a code for EGR system. I had to decifer the service manual and interesting enough all he had to do was leave the line open to atomsphere. Last I heard he hasnt popped an EGR code again. They also came on the mid to late 70s Chryslers.:barf:
