Moding a car for MPG
I know this is completely counter-racing, but if you think about it, those who modify cars for more hp are the only folks with any experience modifying modern automobiles. We can reprogram computers; reshape combustion chambers, ports, runners. We change cam profiles/timing, change compression ratios. We modify suspensions, take engines from one car and fit it into another. All of these things that seem common to us as racers/modders are completely out of the intellectual grasp of 90% of the people who own cars.
I think it would be interesting to see what kind of mods could be made available to the public to better gas mileage on everyday cars.
Here’s a few of my ideas, discuss;
advanced timing, higher compression + water/meth injection is supposed make an engine more efficient right? How about trying that on an economy application.
Swap a 92 cx- or vx honda engine (40 mpg in a hatch) into a crx and pass damn near EVERY gas station.
VW tdi engines are great diesel sippers- 50 mpg or so. Would love to hear about a tdi jetta with propane injection.

I think some mods will actually improve your gas mileage. but the most important "mod" is to keep your car tuned and healthy.
new air filters, new oil filters. making sure your car is aligned etc...
I'm willing to bet that simple bolt on mods such as cold air intake and exhaust actually help gas mileage if driven normally.

a more free flowing intake and exhaust, and tuning the A/F ratio all help MPG

I get over 30mpg in my galant on the highway.
I just lean it down some at cruise speeds.
Its nice having a 4 door car with a full leather interior that gets 30+mpg and runs 11`s at the track.

We went to Daytona Beach with a turbocharged Integra. Had a T4 GT3767S. We got about 33/35MPG after I retuned it. Leaned it out throughout the load points and added timing throughout the vacuum load points. Took about an hour todo this.
