i just purchased a daily driver,its a 88 volvo 740.my problem is that its stuck in winter mode,which means the car will only shift to third gear as its job is torque for the snow.does anyone know about this problem and any advice on how to disengage it? theres a button on the shifter to disengage it but its not working.i thought about resetting the ecu but im not sure if its gonna work...

 

try resetting the ecu what do you have to loose ... then check fuses also ... my .02

Maybe the OD Solenoid ? I hope since you bought one of these as a daily driver you got a service manual with it.

 

i used to own a 90 740, the problem your having is strictly tranny related, there is a relay that controls the overdrive that has gone bad, take it to a tranny place and have them fix it, or if your good enough on autos do it yourself
