Is there anyway to title a constructed vehicle?

I am thinking of building a tube frame chassis vehicle for drag/auto cross since most suitable chassis would be either too exensive (ie, corvette) or require such extensive modification that the cost would be prohibitive. Also a tube frame vehicle would be significantly lighter than any production vehicle as well as having far more structural rigidity.

The idea in its current state:

Build a tube frame chassis with the best possible suspension design with room for large racing slicks and excellent suspension geometry, then drop a cool body onto the chassis. The car is going to have a small block chevy and most likely a T56 transmission. Only would need to seat two, but possibly 4. Entertaining the idea of a using a BMW 2door 3 Series shell with an M3 body kit, cause its pimp but the 3 series is manufactured in sufficent numbers that the body panels would still be mildy affordable (unlike, say Porsche, Ferrari's etc etc.)

Question is what is required to title such a vehicle, like a kit car?

I know someone on here is building a factory five car, if you know anything about this I would love to hear from you. Is the kit certified federaly for road use? or does the state just let kit cars slide cause there are so few of them?

Other than that...you could always check the DMV website for info on titling Kit Cars, and cars "Assembled from parts". I'd send you the links, but the links are on my windows box, and I'm on my linux box right now.

Why? Super Light weight and superior handling/traction.

I have a welder so I could build it myself. It would mostly be a track car but I would also like to be able to take it out for an occasional spin on public roads.

I did check the Florida Legislature but they didn't really have much information that I could find on what constitutes a kit car.

so....you can't title as a kit car, as you are not "updating a body", so I guess "Assembled from parts" is your only means.

As far as the "Hot Rod" comment, most hot rods have a vehicle (and valid vin/title) when they start. There is no laws governing the modification of an existing vehicle, no matter how dramatic the change is.

There are laws if you are trying to "essientially" build your own car.

Hot Rods are either: A. titled as the original vehicle (i.e. 1936 Ford) or as a Kit Car becuase the car was assembled with a kit supplied by a manufacturer

I saw these two items, however, I was looking for a bit more substantial description of the requirements.


I am fairly convinced something with a properly designed adjustable suspension would be vastly superior at both to even an upgraded suspension/chassis on most production vehicles.

 

Sorry, I forgot one....

Hot Rods can also be titled as "Reproductions" or "replicas" if they are entirely new. The catch is that they must represent an older vehicle.

a newer bmw would not classify.
