Default 99 f-250 wont start! click and battery good?

i picked up an 99 f250 looks good but has a few small problems. it ran no prblems teh 1st-1nd day 3rd day i go to shut it off and the starter kept spinning even with the key out of the ignition.i put the jey back in and turned it and the truck started(did this 3 times with same effect) then nothing. checked/charged the battery and its good, alternator is new, when i go to turn it over all i get is a single click. i have power to the starter so im guessing that means the sylonoid is ok and bypassing the wires with a screwdriver i got the starter to turn on...so now im guessing its the actuator that ingages the starter to push the gear out???? i have no idea and what would make the starter keep spinning after the key is out? hope someone can give e an idea or direction to check because i only had it 3 days and dying to drive it.......

Sounds like teh solonoid went south. When it was turning over without the key is because they get hot on the contacts weld themselves together. Replace solonoid and should be good.
Have you disconnected battery the wires to solonoid at all? Sounds like they may be wired backwards

which one? theres one on the firewall that makes the "click" when i try to turn it over... but tracing the wires it goes to the alternator battery and somewhere else (possably the starter), we didnt touch anything but took out the starter and took off the smaller motor/solonoid (one that pushes the gear out) and it was hard to move it in and out not sure if thats normal. i looked and teh solonoid on the firewall is only $17, the starter is a it more at 140 and it has the smaller actuator motor, i was trying to see if i could just find the smaller motor because we jumped the wire and got the starter to spin and we have power at the starer when i turn the ignition. go figure used car / someone else headache.....

Take starter to Autozone / advanced and have it tested for free. If its good then replace solonoid on firewall.
Its going to be hard to push the bendix out because is spring loaded.

Bro, you got a pink elephant. If its a 99 then that is not a F250. If it is a 98 then its possible. By the way, I am going with Solenoid, also. And the difference other than the most obvious, is 1.5 ton and 2.5 ton truck. The F250's are built like brick shit houses. The F150...... well, not so much.
