Default I need a carb guru....

just picked up a 92 LX 5.0 that someone has hacked up and made it carb'd. its got a holley 650 dp from what im told. I dont know the first thing about carb's other than they dump fuel into the intake

now that being said. the car runs rich and kinda stumbles on its face some times. anyone wanna tune the carb for me to get this thing running better?
i took it to lakeland drag strip last night and ran consistant 8.6 @ 88mph with a 2.1 60ft, with a best of 8.5 @ 88mph with a 2.0 60ft. car kept loading up on fuel and stumbling on the launch...

i dont mind paying a few bucks or buying some beer if someone can help me out, i dont know anyone local that messes with carb's. I live in Lakeland btw

thanks in advance for any help

I dont know anyone in Lakeland. You would have to come to Tampa or St Pete.

Shaun and John with All American can help you out.

One thing to think about,.. a stumble doesnt always mean its rich. If its a double pumper,.. its very possible to have a lean stumble and then go pig rich if the squirter or accelerator pump is too small but the power valve or valves is/are too big and/or jetted too large.

A 302/306 making 340hp spinning 6500 RPM works perfectly fine with a 600/650 CFM carb. Anything larger would be too much for something as small as a 302.

And just for reference.

8.6@88 mph in the 1/8 is pretty damn good for a 5.0 especially with a 2.1 60'. What cam is in it,.. or do you know? Aftermarket heads I assume?

this is the info i was givin about the motor, 306 with scat rotating assembly with an E-303 appears to be stock E7 heads, with some sort of equal length shorty's h-pipe to some flowmasters with side pipes (has side skirts with exhaust cutouts) the performer R.P.M. intake and holley 650

the cam is very mild at idle i doubt its an E-cam myself but i didnt build the motor so i have no clue.... im pretty sure its got a 4-banger T-5 in it with either 3.55's or 3.73's, gearing seems alot like my SVO was.

If you can make the drive out here I can promise it'll be worth it! It could be as simple as a blown power valve, incorrect jets, float level to high... and so on.

Shaun

Thanks for putting us out there Hurst!

To be running that with E7's is pretty good.

My guess is the carb is jetted close to perfect,.. maybe 1 or 2 sizes off at the most. Just need some minor tweaks to get it right.

Have you pulled the plugs? How do they read?

Since you just got the car buy some new plugs. They dont have to be expensive,.. motor should run great on $12 worth of Motorcraft plugs. Thats all I ran in mine. Right after you install them.. make a 1 - 3rd run to what ever max RPM you shift at. Go back and pull a couple plugs. If you dont know how to read them,.. take some good clear in focus pics in good light and post them here for me. I can tell you exactly what the motor needs.

Reading the ground strap tells if the heat range of the plug is right for the motor and shows if the ignition advance is set correctly. You watch for where on the ground strap the change of color starts.

The base ring shows if the carb is jetted properly,.. lean/rich. Very sooty or thick shows too rich,.. nothing with some yellowing and/or spots on the porcelain shows too lean. If the motor is running pig rich,.. the porcelain is usually perfectly clean and white.

And you watch the porcelain for spotting or other marks to show signs of detonation.

I need pics like these. And the reading needs to be from a clean freshly installed plugs. Plugs with more than 50 miles on them will have skewed results. The plugs can show if your lean or rich on the bottom end,.. and lean or rich on the top end. Then you will know how to jet the carb. The stumbling, or burping can be fixed with changing accelerator pump cams, squirters and power valves.

^ good info. i had a base idea of how to read plugs, but that is some nice info with the pix. ill try to get some new plugs in it today or tomorrow and see how they look.

as for timing put a light on it and at idle its reading 15* and at about 3K r.p.m. its reading around 32*

Thats pretty good. I wouldnt put any more timing in it then that with pump gas. I only have 13.5 at idle in my son's car.

I dont know your set up.

But MotorCraft SP450 copper plugs have never let me down. With your ignition as advanced as it is,.. you may try one step colder than stock. I'm not sure on the pre code. Parts store will know. Normally their about $2 a plug. When they run a sale you can catch a box of 4 for $6 each. So about $12 for 8.
