Default Got a question, Grounding issue? (**UPDATE**)

Well, I've been working on this 1983 Mercury Grand Marquis trying to get her to run. It's a 5.0 with CFI.

She will start up and run, except for a ticking lifter, beautifully.
Well, Started her up, drove around the block and it died right in front of the driveway, tried to start it up and nothing. Ok, so I checked the secondary resistance in the coil (I had just replaced it before I went around the block) and it's blown. The coil was almost to hot to handle, shouldn't it be warm to the touch after like a 1k mile trip?

My theory, which some others agree, is the negative battery cable (or anything other ground) is not functioning properly and is trying to ground it through the coil bracket, thus bringing on some heat with it, getting the coil hot and blowing it.

Any ideas?

Cliffs:
Drive around the block, brand new coil blown...
Bad ground?

ive exploded an old canister coil because my voltage regulator was bad and pushing over 17v outs. as for grounds, check your negative battery cable and make sure its not corroded, and check the frame-to-engine ground strap

**UPDATE**
The grounds and connections for the voltage regulator were cleaned, She ran for approximately 15 minutes then died.
She would not start up again...
There was spark from the coil to distributor but I am not sure about from distrubutor wire to plug as I was not there.

Does anybody have ANY idea of what is going on?
