Stroker question
331 or 347?
I'm doing some long term planning on a total refurb on my old '85 and am curious about what you may lose as far as lifespan/reliability with a stroked 5.0. I really like the idea of a 347 but is a 331 a better way to go for reliabilities sake? No power adders will be used.

If you do not have any clearance issues do a 351 based 392. Very reliable and tons of power. Heck Ford sells a nice reliable one for a couple thousand out of the Motorsports catalog. I would have done one of these but my hood clearances are close enough, a 351 would have required a huge ugly ass hood for my blow thru set-up.

Are you using a carb? On FI setups, sometimes when you already have aftermarket heads, cam, intake already it's more cost effective to go 331. Most 30x based parts will work on a 331. Stretching smallish intakes, injectors and cams tend to choke a 347.
If you don't already have heads and intake go 347. No real drawbacks with most "quality" kits. Most good n/a engines make atleast 1hp pr. C.I.
so 347 offers 16 more hp with no real difference cost in the "kit".
if your just looking to make some power in a street car, rebuild the 302 put a girdle on it get a nice set of heads, an intake and some long tubes. with a gear out back you may be happy. and reliable at the same time.
if not go with the stroked 351 as mentioned before. don't know what your plans are for the car.

i am putting a 351w in my 85 Crown vic as opposed to the stock 302, i need the torque over the 100# of weight savings, the car weighs around 4000#. My next engine will most likely be a DSS 396, although id really like to go 429/460 but id need to find a Torino to serve as a donor car, that and the cost to modify it will be substantially more.

The reason I'm looking at the 331/347 stroker is I want to retain the factory aircleaner that came on the 85 and not need a new hood. When I installed a Eldebrock air gap intake I lost a little clearance but it still clears the hood (barely).
It is my understanding with a 351 the taller deck would be a problem. I want to keep the car looking bone stock on the outside and stock as possible under the hood <grin>.
The real question here was reliability 331 vs 347.
My plans for the car are a good set of aluminum heads, a hotter but daily driver cam and whatever else one of our best local engine builders says I need. Who is a good local engine builder?
Chassis I have a lot to do. New rear end, I have to lose the 7.5 and a total replacement of the suspension/brakes. The whole 9 yards. K member, a frames, coil overs..... Maximum Motorsports kit? Long term plan.
I guess where I'm going with this is having my old frumpy/mullet 85 running like a bee-stung greyhound and handling like a slot car but looking like it did when when the wifey bought it new in 85. Sleeper?
