Focus Tach
Hi,
My friend has a 02' ZX3 he jus got.
The problem is the tach it comes with doesnt have a redline.
It goes all the way to 7k.
It makes its full power at 5300 RPM so where do you focus owners shift when lanuching and racing?
Thanks

On the stock motor, there was no reason to take the motor past 6000. It just didn't make power in that range. However with my Crower Stage 2's, the car felt like it would pull right through the stock 6750 rev limiter (or at least thats where I think it was...memory is fuzzy as that was over a year ago when I had the car). Those cams combined with a lightweight flywheel were by far the best money spent on that motor.

Hey thanks a lot for the info.
by the way what year focus did you have?
Also, im thinking of gettin a short ram intake soon.
The intake i want is an AEM short ram on Modacar.com and they want 155.00 which is the cheapest ive found online.
Or should i just go with an Ebay intake like so many people have told me to do. They mostly say its jus a tube and cone filter so why spend more from brand name.
I found one of Ebay that fits for only 40.00 and it has the Air Flow Sensor input on it also. Let me know.
Thanks

I had a 2000 ZX3. Despite all the first year recalls it was a great car. I had some decent gains with a FocusSport 4-1 race header, 2.5" exhaust, and a conical air filter. I think it dyno'd around 124 fwhp...not bad for so little invested.
Some people swear by the AEM cold air intake. Personally I don't think any of those are worth the risk of sucking up a gallon of Tampa's finest during a summer rain storm.
You don't even need to pay for a filter on a stick. If you remove the mass air meter from the air box, you can put a K&N cone filter right on the end of the MAF (I don't know the size off hand, but if you bring the MAF with you to a place like Automotive Engineering they will be able to help you find a size that works). Keep the stock rubber/plastic elbow as it is engineered better than the $50 Ebay intake.
I threw on a K&N conical and left the bottom portion of the air box in the car so some cool air could still get to the filter. Worked out nicely and didn't cost me more than $40.
FYI - unless things have changed, the EBAY Focus intakes are complete shit. They were built out of crap materials, the filters were shit, and they didn't even fit correctly.

Alright thanks.
Hey one more quick question when i was buying the 02 ZX3 i took a look at an 04' model it has a Duratec 2.3 liter engine with 145 hp instead of the Zetecs 2.0 130hp, you ever drive or ride in one of those?
Also, this is a stupid question but why does Ford end there engine with "tec"?
Thanks

No idea about the "tec" deal. The Zetec series motor has been around for quite a long time over in Europe. I'm a bit rusty, but I think they started in Formula Ford type racing over in Europe and were found in some of their Escorts and Fiestas. They actually had an 8 and 12 cylinder Zetec motor available to the aftermarket.
Duratec started in the US with the 2.5l V6 found in the Contour/Mistique. The 2.3l Duratec is actually a Mazda motor...not sure if the V6's were Ford or Mazda design.
So I guess the "tec" names are Ford's gimmick for their smaller DOHC motors.
