Carbon Buildup on Throttle Body

Took Jenny's GT in for an oil change today at Bill Currie Ford. The service guy comes to me and tells me it needs the airfilter changed and the carbon buildup cleaned out of the throttle body. Of course I ask, "how much?". $27.95 for the air filter and $69 for LABOR to clean the throttle body! What the fuck are these guys smoking? :o

I'm going to replace her air filter with a K&N and clean the TB myself. Tell me if I'm wrong, but brake cleaner or carb cleaner sprayed on a rag should do the trick, right? I've never had to deal with carbon buildup before.

Doesnt Ford put some kinda protective coating on thier throttle body's I am pretty sure most of the new cars have it? I am not sure if carb cleaner or break cleaner will hurt it or not I would call and ask Ford? On my throttlebody it says not to clean it:?

If you want to put a bit of time in it, get a can of SeaFoam. It plugs into the vacuum source but cleans out the WHOLE intake tract. The stuff is raved about by everyone that uses the stuff.

i think that warning is to get you into the dealer so they can charge you 70 bux!

i have used carb cleaner with no problems on my car........... so..............

even if there was some "special coating" it cant do too much.... i havent heard of people keeping the specially coated factory TB over an aftermarket one

What he said - you're fine using carb cleaner...have done it hundreds of times....

The coating they put on there is an anti-dust spray that helps keep the intake from attracting particles of carbon etc. But yeah just some TB/Carb cleaner should clean it right up.

Cause were not smarter than them when it comes to the car they built?
