You are also a Keystone member if you are reading our newsletter, and you can also post non-commercial
articles, etc here. -Bob
On Tuesdays, AMC and maybe other theaters have $5 tickets all day.
Yep. I saw it and it was a great emotion-provoking movie.
Having the dog tell the story was a great idea.

Article for Keystone Motor Club:

I knew Steve McQueen.......
------------------------------------------

Rob Abreu

I knew Steve, he hung around my fathers gas station in Santa Paula, Ca along with Von Dutch who lived right across the street in an old school bus. Something very few people know about Steve is he was enormously generous $$$$ with disadvantaged children. Steve had a very unhappy childhood and he could never fathom why out of all the people on the planet earth he was chosen to be highly paid movie star. Consequently he gave a lot, and I mean a lot, of his money away to children's charities. Steve was by nature a very quite person, a real wall flower ... his real personality wasn't that quite charisma you see in the movies. So he gave the money away very quietly, without publicists taking a picture of him handing a check to someone, like many Hollywood celebrities do. By the way, when I knew him he'd put on a lot of weight and had a big bushy beard so no one recognized him ... he loved that no one recognized him and that they thought he was some bum hanging around the station ... if only they knew LOL !!!

Blue Skies, Steve. -Barbara

Blogen Geeze
Just shortly before his first trip to Mexico, He and his wife stopped in at the Royal Oaks Museum Antiques in Crystal Lake Ill. He wanted the owner to open the museum on a day after hours. The owner was told by his kids, that Steve McQueen wanted to see some antiques.

The owner, Always wearing a Stetson and matching boots with the pants cuffs tucked in, not being interested in current Hollywood, said who the h--- is Steve McQueen? After the kids explained and the private tour had been completed, Steve bought some toys, he, his wife, his stuntman and the owner sat and talked for another hour or so about the coming trip to Mexico. The owner proudly told everyone from that day forward, that he knew Steve McQueen.

The owner of the museum, was my father.

Rain or shine?
-Bob Briesacher

alan mevorah going anyway. but in a regular car ... who knows?
-Alan

Seeya
Henry Kerr

If worse comes to worse, we can toodle up to Keystone park (about 1/2 mile north). They have a covered pavilion.
Linda Martin

Yessir! No problem. I understand. See you there.
Linda, I will post your suggestion in the newsletter

-Bob

------------------------------
Bob Briesacher,
I plan to show up anyway, and slightly early.
I plan to have an umbrella and also bring the stuff I signed up for.

A lot of times a rain date is the following week on the same day,
but the club has not decided anything officially. And since today is the day before,
I don't know a good way to come up with an answer.....except for myself.

But I'm pretty stubborn....and optimistic.... LOL
Another day, another time, another car club,.....two people were doing the cooking
and I held the umbrella....20 anxious hungry people were sitting in the pavilion
at Fort Desoto.......chewing on the wooden tables.....lol, but I was not going to be the first to leave...

Looks like attendance will be up to each person, their car, the circumstances, etc.
and I hold no negative judgements on other peoples decisions.
-Bob Vail

17 August 2019 Gourmet hot dogs and rain........
I counted 15 people under the leaky tent at the Keystone Motor Club meeting, eating hot dogs and loving it!
It was pouring down rain and we were standing in about 2-3 inches of water.
I could not tell you what conversations were spoken, but everybody was having a good time.
My shoes are still wet.
--------------------------------

When I first pulled into the Winn Dixie parking lot, I saw a blue tent in the place where we were supposed to have our meeting.
As I turned the corner, Henry Kerr & Betty St John had beat me there, set up the tent, the banner, and positioned the grill and a couple tables and chairs.
----------------------------

The grill was intended to be gas powered, but needed some "fixing" by Chef Henry. A more permanent fix using pieces of metal tubes (electrical conduit?) and some welding might be in order, but Henry brought a bucket of real charcoal instead of compressed briquets, and the gas part was only used for lighting the charcoal.
---------------------

We had several brands of hot dogs, but the four that I ate were Hebrew National on Alan's recommendation, and Henry was wrapping bacon around the dogs on request. We also had sauerkraut, relish, mustard, and I'm glad I had the P38 GI can opener still on my keychain from the Vietnam era to open the cans of chili. Decades ago when I was married, it was the only can opener we had and I still keep it........
-----------------------

We were short a few supplies and Betty St John bought a few more things in the Winn Dixie.
Maybe in our haste to get there, a few people may have forgot to load a few things
and some things appeared that we had never put on any list.
------------------------

Jan took a few pictures before it started raining. I want to post them when I figure out
how to translate them over to newsletter format.
I wish we had a pic of Chef Henry AFTER it had been raining. LOL That would be priceless.
---------------------------

With the banner hanging up in front of the tent, it was a good time to clean it a bit.
Buddy Rawls told me how he acquired the banner years ago as he was helping me with cleaning the banner.
It looks better now, and maybe some touch up in a few strategic spots with Ajax and
a small scrub brush between the letters and around the edges will put it back in spotless condition.
Maybe throrough drying before rolling up will keep mildew away.
-----------------------

Joanne Pistorius spoke about her concours and left just as it was starting to rain.
-----------------------

Henry was soaking wet and when I offered to hold my umbrella over him, he declined, saying that
the water off the umbrella was getting onto the food and the grill.
------------------------

I counted 15 people under the leaky tent at the Keystone Motor Club meeting, eating hot dogs and loving it!
It was pouring down rain and we were standing in about 2-3 inches of water.
I could not tell you what conversations were spoken, but everybody was having a good time.
My shoes are still wet as I type this.
------------------------

Sam Prentice was the only one I saw actually wearing knee high rubber boots.
Sam gave me the original sign in sheet from the very first meeting with the original charter members
from March 2012. I need to find a way to photo it and put it in this newsletter.
--------------------------

It was a busy day for all of us. I want to thank the people who were able to help pack away the tent,
banner, tables, chairs and other stuff.
And thanks for coming out, folks!
I had a good time.

Starting a Keystone Motor Club history......
-------------------------------------
On August 17 2019 at the Gunn Highway Winn Dixie:
Sam Prentice gave me the original sign in sheet from the very first meeting with the original charter members from March 2012. I need to find a way to photo it and put it in this newsletter.
At the top of the list it says "Keystone Car Buffs"
but.........
I'm reluctant to publicly post it here since it includes email addresses, real addresses, and some phone numbers.
I don't want anyone to get spammed onto a mailing list.

However here are some names of the original founders:

Milt Roorda had volunteered his garage for the very first meeting.
Other Original members in sign in order included:
Randy Packer
Dick Peterson
Bill Van Hoogen
Buddy Rawls
Peter "Fritz" Freydberg
Mike Fritz
Woody Wood
Bob and Sandy kling
Frank Padala
Harry G Gunn
Jerry Kennedy
Patrick Gerald
Mary Whitworth
Don Degain
Vic Piano
Sam Prentice.

--------------------------

If anyone has recollections of past times, let me know.
We can make some additions to Keystone history.

For the Keystone Motor Club newsletter a movie review

-----------------------------------

A Man and a Woman was the name of the movie.........sometimes when I'm driving alone in the rain.....
I think about his drive to Paris in the rain to meet her train......and I start to hear the music...........

When they were apart, everything was in shades of grey.
When they were together, everything was in brilliant color.
That's how it also was years ago when I fell in love.

I will be happy to check in with Loriann. She seems to be fine with our presence. Wonder what it would be like to set up directly opposite or the west side of the parking lot. There are a lot of trees although they might not provide us much protection from the sun. We would be closer to Gunn Hwy and the traffic that might inspire folks to come take a peek. I will do a drive by between 10-12 Thursday and scout it out.
jan

Keep us posted, jan.
Maybe when it cools down a bit later in the year, moving to the sunny West side would work better.
-Bob
-------------------------------------------------
I am good with Winn Dixie if they will have us. It would be nice to outgrow it. We can deal with that when/if it happens.
Henry

Thanks for the responses.

Where were you in '62?
When WE were American Graffiti.

Article for Keystone Motor Club-----------------
by Bob Vail
In the small, town I lived in as a teenager, we drove the "main drag" from the Dairy Queen on the North end of town to the South end which was the A&W. Downtown was alive with the sound of Rock and Roll music
from car radios all tuned to the same WSAT station. Russ McIntyre was our local "Wolfman Jack". From my upstairs bedroom I could listen to Dick Biondi at WLS in Chicago. Stores were lit up or open and people went "window shopping" by walking around on the downtown sidewalks, saying hi to each other and looking in the windows.

If we didn't have a car, or were not proud of what we had, we would find a parked one on the main drag across from the S&W cafeteria..........and lean against it as if it was ours and yell out greetings to the kids who drove by. Robert Myers had a light blue 55 Chevy with no front bumper. Mayfield drove a jacked up in the back 1940 black two door Ford and they also had after school jobs to pay for it. I don't recall what the rich kids living on Fulton street did.
------------------------

Al's Nighthawk was "Mel's Drive In" to us. It was in an old ice cream place on Highway 601 with a dirt parking lot, but he sold pizza. It was the same "Original Crispy Pizza" pre-fab crust that was sold at every drive in movie I ever went to. It was rumored that Al also sold beer without checking ID's.
------------------------

Years later I went to my high school reunion, and Friday night we gathered at THE NEW AL's NIGHTHAWK.
Al had sold out and moved a few blocks toward town. Al had not changed. The pizza had not changed. The new location parking lot was paved.......

In high school, John Bulla had been a bit of a hero, since he had once driven a dirt track stock car, and people were talking about it and he was re-living his glory days in his memory. John couldn't join us for Saturday at the Country Club Dinner since he was a truck driver and had to work the next day. He may not have had the $35 for the dinner.

Looking back, the kids who raised hell in high school had grown up, got married, had kids, bought a house and were now raising hell as partners for life.....and they were laughing about old times.....because Al really DID sell beer to teenagers!

I learned something about life from that........you never go back to your first reunion or even the first 5, 6, 7, 8 or so. You give time for life to level things out......and plenty of people have nothing left to brag about 10 or 20 years later. Nice guy that I am, I was not going to destroy the high school hero by mentioning what I had done since high school. Some people peak early.
--------------------------

Saturday dinner at the Country Club they passed around the microphone and I was one person who knew how to use a microphone. I thanked them all for being the inspiration that had propelled me to greater things.
It is true that a lot of people never move far from where they were born. In that small town becoming a member of the Country Club may have been the biggest thing they would ever do.

We went to IHOP after the dinner. I sat half way down the long table. Wealthier on my right, less well off on my left. In the days of knights and kings they always had an elaborate salt shaker that separated the commoners from the noblemen. Commoners were "Below the salt". I thought to myself that on that night, it was the syrup selection that divided my reunion class. Across from me a classmate talked about their experience collecting some autographed racing memorabilia.
There was no need for me to tell anyone that I had been to Daytona many times or anything else that I've done.
I am still the nice guy and will not destroy the dreams of someone else.
-----------------------------------

They say that you cannot go back there again.
You cannot go back there, because "there" isn't "there" anymore.
Life is a strand of pearls, and once we move to another one, we cannot go back.
Let's remember the people and the memories the way they were back then.

We should never go back there again.....and destroy the memories of when WE were American Grafitti.
--------------------------------

Oh, and Wolfman Jack?
He was a real DJ before American Grafitti.
After American Graffiti, he hosted the Midnight Special on TV for many years.
The blonde girl on the painted sign behind the current stage at Old Town Kissimmee was "Little Darlin".
After the Midnight Special, Wolfman Jack opened the Rock and Roll Emporium at Old Town Kissimmee.
Two years later Wolfman Jack went to Rock and Roll Heaven.

The building is gone. Wolfman Jack is gone.
You can forever hear his recorded voice during the Old Town Saturday night Cruise.
But only if you can go back there........
