Ken Miles may be a forgotten legend in England, his birth place, but he is certainly not forgotten in the U.S. Maybe that is why he and his family left England to become U.S.citizens and spend his racing career here! I have heard that there is next to nothing commemorating his life in the UK. Sad, isn't it.

The centenary of Carroll Shelby’s birth will be honored with one of Goodwood’s signature tributes at this year’s Goodwood Revival, September 8-10, comprising cars that were not only raced but also designed and developed by the 1959 Le Mans winner. Running throughout the weekend, the celebration will include the likes of the MG-TC in which Shelby competed for the very first time, in 1952.

Shelby’s impact on motor racing can be seen each and every year at the Revival, and 2023 will be no different, as an assortment of Cobras—the Anglo-American sports cars for which the native Texan is best known—are set to take to the track in the all-star Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration.

Meanwhile, the Whitsun Trophy will host a number of examples of the Ford GT40, whose design Shelby played such an integral part in refining.

As Goodwood celebrates 75 years of the Motor Circuit, and 25 years of the Revival, it’s a chance to reflect on the motorsport legends who have joined us over the years. Shelby is no exception, having raced at Goodwood during the Circuit’s heyday in arguably one of the most important and dramatic races in the annals of British motorsport: the 1959 RAC Tourist Trophy. This race saw him share the winning DBR1/300 with his co-drivers Jack Fairman and Stirling Moss, the latter a late addition after his own car was eliminated in a spectacular fire during a routine pit stop.

impact. This order obscured a key rule in Le Mans competition: the car that starts farther back on the grid and finishes in a dead heat (side-by-side) is declared the winner for having technically covered a greater distance. What Really Happened in 1966 Euphoric Ford Domination: Ford swept the podium, but in an orchestrated result. Leo Beebe, Ford’s racing boss, ordered the top cars (including Miles/Hulme in #1 and McLaren/Amon in #2) to finish together for a triumphant team image. The “Distance Rule” Twist: Unknown or misunderstood by Miles and other drivers, the race organizers (ACO) ruled

that since McLaren/Amon’s #2 car started farther back on the grid, it technically traveled a greater race distance and was awarded the win, even though Miles had been in the lead at the end. Ken Miles Left Out: Miles, on the verge of winning the famed endurance “Triple Crown” (Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans) in the same year, was denied the feat. Reports and later research suggest Ford management was aware the staged finish would deny Miles the victory, yet went ahead for corporate interests. Controversy and Conspiracy Disputed Scoring: Some credible team sources later argued Miles’s car

was, in fact, a lap ahead at the finish, but Ford’s own managers (allegedly) convinced the ACO to remove a lap, cementing the orchestrated finish and denying Miles his historic win. Legacy of Bitterness: To this day, the 1966 finish is hotly debated, with many believing that Ford’s management chose PR over sporting fairness and that Miles was betrayed by the very team he helped bring to glory. Ken Miles’s “betrayal” at Le Mans remains one of motorsport’s most infamous corporate manipulations—where organizational politics and image took precedence over personal triumph and sportsmanship, forever altering the story of Ford’s greatest racing victory.

After the controversial outcome of the 1966 Le Mans, Ken Miles was open about his disappointment and frustration with the orchestrated Ford finish. According to several sources, he commented: “So ends my contribution to this motor race.” This remark was made to express his disillusionment after being instructed to slow down and stage the photo finish, knowing he would not get the win he

deserved. Miles told journalist Brock Yates, “We were told to finish neck-and-neck and that’s what we did. If they’d let Bruce and me race for it, we wouldn’t have had all this nonsense.” This captures Miles’s view that the competition was compromised by team orders and corporate decisions, and that he would have preferred a fair race with Bruce McLaren without outside interference.

Mechanic Charlie Agapiou recalled Miles “bitterly grumbling he’d been screwed,” further highlighting Miles’s sense of having been denied a historic victory. Miles also reportedly commented that the outcome “made it mandatory for any driver who wished to be sure of winning the race with a Le Mans start to start dead last,” criticizing the technicality that cost him the win.
