Default When independents raced a Ferrari street car at Daytona 24

I recall when a group of independent racers who did not even have uniforms raced a Ferrari street car at the Daytona 24.

Ferrari had forbidden them to race and had refused to sell them extra wheels to mount extra race tires.

Resourceful as racers are, NART, North American Racing Team, contacted every Ferrari owner in the country and had

borrowed their spare tires to get extra rims.
-----------------------

I suspect that NART had taken their borrowed wheels to the Firestone track garage and de-mounted the street tires,

mounted race tires, and did the trick in reverse once the race was over.
----------------

Back then I did not think much of race teams that did not have uniforms and air wrenches to change tires.

Since that time, I got wiser, and now I have a greater respect for people who overcome "the establishment"

and go on to do well.

Probably the guys who rebelled against the establishment in 1969 as independents is

the reason the Ferrari 365 GTB is called the 365 GTB "Daytona".

-----------------

In 1971 the 365 GTB kicked butt "officially" at LeMans.

You will notice that once Ferrari started making the cars, the fender flares got a lot nicer

This may be the original Daytona car but in a "restored" state.
Complete with it's history........

The mirrors were the kind used at that time in the 60's.
The door lights were correct. The rear one is not. None of the number circle lights were enough to read the numbers,
but the Daytona timing/scoring line had a big spotlight.and a flip clock in the grass.
---------------------------------
Dave and Sheila Haskard of MacDill Sports Car Club kept a runnning record of cars as they passed the timing/scoring line in the infield turn.
There was a trailer with glass windows on the track side, that had timing/scoring workers manually writing the time as the cars passed by.
------------------------------
I showed up early for my timing shift. The last words of the guy I relieved were:
"Here's the cards for three cars. All are Porsche prototypes. They are leading the race." ....and he ran for the door.....lol
Talk about pressure.....my first time EVER timing cars at Daytona 24....and I got the leading cars.

Lucky for me the cars were numbered sequentially 50, 51, 52.
And once you knew about when they would be coming around again , things got easier.
---------------------------
Back then street cars with engines as small at 1100cc's to 1250 cc's raced at the same time as the prototypes.
Their lap times of small street cars before the track dogleg was put in were so slow that the Porsche prototypes would pass
the same bug eye sprite TWICE per lap.
-------------------------------------

The original car did not have the long fins on the front fenders.
The modern dry break gas filler was probably an upgrade so the car could be raced in modern vintage racing.
There is probably a modern fuel cell behind the gas filler.
The two colors of Off switches are probably an upgrade so the car could be raced in modern vintage racing....under new rules.
Seats had no headrests back then.

The Only Road-going Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona ‘Alloy’ In Existence

Published on Sep 5, 2017
This is the only road-going Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona ‘Alloy’ in existence and it's being offered by RM Sotheby's in matching numbers, ‘barn-find’ condition after hiding in Japan for nearly 40 years at the Ferrari – Leggenda e Passione auction this 9 September in Maranello.

Documented with history and 2017 personal inspection notes by marque expert Marcel Massini, this ultimate road-going Daytona is ideal for a fresh concours restoration or preservation class exhibition. With over 1,200 versions of Ferrari’s powerful 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ produced from 1969–1973, only five lightweight Alloy competition cars, which dominated the 24 Hours of Daytona, were built.

Further to those, Ferrari commissioned only one street version of the Daytona with an aluminium body, the very car offered here today.

It's a sure-fire standout in any Ferrari collection as the only example of its kind and a car many thought did not exist, bearing the hallmarks of collectability in every regard. More information about the 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta Alloy by Scaglietti:

The Unknown Ferrari DAYTONA "A one off Alloy Berlinetta" Help fuel The Dutch Guy;
.patreon.com%2FTheDutchGuy&event=video_description&v=bvcLfIHJleY The only road-going ‘Alloy’ 365 GTB/4 Daytona in existence Matching numbers and offered in complete ‘barn-find’ condition Discovered in Japan (2017) after being hidden for nearly 40 years On Auction now by www.rmsothebys.com Chassis no. 12653 is approximately the 30th car in the Daytona numbering sequence, wearing Scaglietti body no. 32.

Other than chassis number 12547 (which was comissioned by Luigi Chinetti to run the 24 Hours of Le Mans), this car was the only standard-specification Daytona that clothed for alloy coachwork. Completed in June 1969, this Daytona was equipped with desirable Plexiglas headlamps and power windows, in addition to its tailor-made aluminium coachwork, and finished in Rosso Chiaro (20-R-190) over a Nero (VM 8500) leather interior. In September, the car was distributed for retail to the Bologna dealer Motor S.p.A. di Carla Allegretti, from whom it was purchased later

that month by Luciano Conti, the founder and publisher of Autosprint magazine. Mr Conti’s company sold the Ferrari in September 1970 to Guido Maran of Verona, who in turn re-sold the car a month later to Carlo Ferruzzi of Ravenna. In July 1971, the Daytona’s Italian registration was cancelled and the car was imported by a Japanese dealership three months later. Chassis number 12653 was then featured in the January 1972 issue of Car Graphic, a Japanese enthusiast magazine. In May 1975, the Berlinetta was purchased by Goro Guwa of Gifu, Japan, and in

April 1979 it passed to Tateo Ito of Nagoya. Almost a year later the car was acquired by Makoto Takai, and he hid the car away for nearly 40 years. It was fabled and known by very few collectors to exist, but many true Ferraristi were unaware that such a special and important car existed, period. Several tried for years to purchase the car, but to no avail. It is offered here for the first time in decades, ready and waiting for a new owner. Currently in a barn-find state of condition, the Ferrari has clearly been in storage for a number of years, and in June 2017, it

underwent a through evaluation by marque expert Marcel Massini. He confirmed the presence of the matching-numbers engine and transaxle, per stampings that correspond to factory build records. While the various Japanese owners conducted a number of minor cosmetic modifications, 12653 remains remarkably authentic in many other ways. The interior in particular displays impressive originality, with good condition confirmed in the door panels, sun visors, interior rear-view mirror, seats, carpeting, gearshift knob and the headliner. Mr Massini also

noted that the aluminium panels he examined were stamped with proper matching Scaglietti body numbers and that the original spare wheel appeared to have never been used. When asked about the car, Massini commented, ‘What a super scarce Daytona barn find, the only remaining aluminium-bodied production GTB/4, sold new to Luciano Conti, a close friend of Commendatore Enzo Ferrari.’ Currently displaying 36,390 kilometres, which are believed to represent actual use, this rare 365 GTB/4 is an ideal acquisition for the consummate Ferrari enthusiast

searching for absolutely the most unique example of any given model. It may be presented at preservation class venues or, for the collector prepared to underwrite a full restoration, chassis number 12653 offers an unprecedented opportunity to refurbish the only street-specified alloy Daytona. #FerrariDaytona
