[h=1]Some personal notes on Betty Jane France[/h] Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at 6:20 by GODWIN KELLY
As you know Daytona Beach is a relatively small town and back in the day, when I was a child, my parents would bump into Betty Jane and Bill France Jr. out on the town.
The Kellys and Frances were not close friends, more acquaintances, who shared many of the same close friends.
I always thought that was odd, but my parents were a bit older than the Frances.
My mother was in the Junior League with Betty Jane. My father and Bill Jr. traveled the same social circles, which probably explains how I got primo guest passes for some races as a kid.
There is a photo of myself at 15 in Daytona Victory Lane following the 1970 Firecracker 400, which hangs in the Speedway media center.
My job that hot day was to hand out soft drinks to the winning team.
So, in a way, I have known both Betty Jane and Bill Jr. most of my life, well before I started this motorsports writing stuff for the News-Journal.
Yachting
The last time I went to visit Betty Jane France in her office overlooking the Halifax River, we shared many laughs.
The lady had a tremendous sense of humor and had a zeal for life. I honestly thought I would not be the one to write about her death.
I thought I would be retired or be the first to pass along into the next world.
Anyway, one revelation learned that day was how she liked using her yacht. She didn’t like “cruising,” so she would dispatch the yacht either north or south then catch up to it with a quick flight and use the vessel as a floating hotel room.
The big clip
My Betty Jane France paperclip

Betty Jane France didn’t do things small. It was always big so I was shocked when she dove into her stash of paperclips to organize some papers in her office.
These things looked like paperclips, but they were dinosaur-sized, like 10 times bigger than a clip you and I would utilize.
She could tell I was fascinated with the big clips and handed me one.
“Here, try one,” she told me. “They work really well.”
I carry that clip (pictured above) to this day.
Coupon lady
I visit Bed, Bath & Beyond at least twice a month. We have a coffee brewing system and the only discs available for this particular system are carried by BB&B.
On one quick trip to that store, I ran into Betty Jane and daughter Lesa, both with shopping carts overflowing with all manner of house products.
And this caught my attention. Betty Jane had a handful of BB&B coupons that I believe she was going to split with Lesa.
She saw I had a load of product and handed me a $5 off-your-order coupon.
Betty Jane was quick to explain, “They only let you use one coupon when you check out.”
So one last time, thank you for sharing, Betty Jane.
And to the France family, thank you for sharing Betty Jane.

[h=1]Living Legends announces award winners[/h] Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 11:21 by GODWIN KELLY
The Living Legends of Auto Racing, Inc., was founded in 1993 with an objective of recognizing those that have contributed to building the sport of organized stock car racing, from the days of beach racing in the 1940s and 1950s to today’s great American pastime. LLOAR is an all-volunteer organization with a membership of more than 600 worldwide, many of whom are instrumental in the maintenance and operation of its “Museum of Racing History” in South Daytona. LLOAR has also partnered with the City of Daytona Beach in the creation of the “Memorial Brick Walk of Fame,” a permanent tribute to the greatest names in stock car racing.
The list of 2017 honorees includes these motorsports personalities:
Pioneer of Racing AwardBrownie King, NASCAR Grand National Series (now called the Sprint Cup Series) and NASCAR Convertible Series veteran. He competed in 121 sanctioned events from 1956 to 1961, recording two top-5 finishes and 25 top-10 finishes. In 1959, he logged a 5th place finish in the Convertible Series standings, one place behind 4th place finisher “King” Richard Petty.
Distinguished Driver AwardSterling Marlin, NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series competitor. Marlin made 825 starts in NASCAR’s top two levels, winning the Daytona 500 twice (1994 & 1995) and the 1996 Winston 500 in a career that ran from 1976 to 2009 and garnered 12 wins and 12 poles in Cup and Xfinity competition. Marlin was the 1983 Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year, and has been recognized twice (1995 & 1996) as Tennessee Professional Athlete of the Year
Dedicated Service AwardAllan E. Brown, noted racing historian and former producer/editor of National Spedways Directory. He is also well-recognized for authoring the “History of America’s Speedways – Past and Present,” a detailed analysis of over 8,000 racing venues in the United States. Brown and wife Nancy compiled roughly two million miles in their travels, visiting and documenting the story of over 2300 tracks in the U.S. Brown is a member of the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame (2011), the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame (2009), and The Villages Motor Racing Fan Club Hall of Fame (2014), and in 2002 he and Nancy received the Stew Reamer Award for lifetime service to the weekly racing industry.
Russ Moyer Media AwardDave Moody, veteran Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius XM NASCAR radio personality and Sirius XM voting representative on the 48-person panel that selects the annual class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Moody has been a Motorsports broadcast journalist since 1983, and currently serves MRN as lead turn announcer for Sprint Cup, XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series events. As host of the nationally syndicated Sirius XM show Sirius XM Speedway, Moody is recognized by many as one of the most authoritative voices in motorsports.
Allison Family AwardChip Ganassi, well-respected team owner and former race car driver, with a resume that includes five appearances in the Indianapolis 500 in a career span of six years (1981 – 1986). After a driver career-ending crash in 1986, he went on to field teams in the IndyCar Series, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Tudor United SportsCar Championship, World Endurance Championship, and Global Rally Cross. Chip Ganassi Racing presently fields cars for Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson (Sprint Cup), Brennan Poole (Xfinity), and Scott Dixon, Tony Kanann, and Charlie Kimball (IndyCar).
Tribute to the Early DaysWill Cagle, legendary Florida short track driver with over 900 wins in a 30-year career behind the wheel. He also served as promoter and racing official at several tracks, and last year at age 78 made a brief return to competition in the Allentown Indoor Auto Race at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA.
Saturday Night Hero AwardBobby Brack, South Florida racing legend. Known as “The Chief”, his trademark #57 race car was a fixture on the Southern circuit for over three decades. As a NASCAR Winston Cup competitor, he raced at such tracks as Daytona, Atlanta, Charlotte, Rockingham, and Talladega. Brack has been inducted into the Hialeah Speedway Hall of Fame, the Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway Hall of Fame, and The Villages Motor Racing Fan Club Hall of Fame. Brack’s distinguished performances on the stock car circuit earned him a spot as a stunt driving double in the biker cult film, Wild Rebels (1967).
The Ray Fox AwardMike Curb, a 40+ year veteran car owner who fielded cars for some of the sport’s biggest names, including Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett, Johnny Sauter, and Kyle Larson, to name a few. Wheeler: Ray Fox was hard-nosed, liked to win races

Monday, June 16, 2014 at 5:43 by GODWIN KELLY

These were Humpy Wheeler’s thoughts on Fox:
Long before becoming president of Charlotte Motor Speedway and Speedway Motorsports, I worked in Firestone’s racing division, and Ray Fox was one of the company’s most prominent race car testers. In the ensuing years as president of Charlotte Motor Speedway, I maintained a close relationship with him.
Ray was one of the most accomplished men in the history of American racing right in there with Smokey Yunick, George Bignotti, A.J. Watson, Banjo Matthews and other mechanical geniuses. Ray and Smokey were quite the pair, both being from Daytona Beach and highly competitive with each other.

(Photo; Getty Images)

Ray was also a hard-nosed guy who liked to win. However, he could turn around and help a young driver find success like he did with David Pearson and Buddy Baker. David’s first win came in Ray’s car at the 1961 World 600 in Charlotte, a feat Baker later did in a Fox Dodge.
Ray was a true pioneer back in the days when the superspeedway era had just begun. People just didn’t know what was going to happen on those new big, fast tracks that frankly scared more than a few people. His great legacy will be, like city rival Smokey, mastering horsepower in his day.
Ray was one of the guys who helped figure out how to make a car go fast and last at the same time. His 1960 win at the Daytona 500 with Jr. Johnson proved that.
-------------

Humpy Wheeler

I contacted Humpy Wheeler, the former president of Charlotte Motor Speedway, and one of NASCAR’s history keepers, for his thoughts about Ray Fox, who died Sunday at the age of 98. Fox was one of NASCAR’s pioneer mechanics. He moved to Daytona Beach in 1947 and established himself as a stock-car legend.
Wheeler retired from promoting NASCAR races five years ago. He has since been inducted into 13 Halls of Fame including the prestigious International Motorsports. He is presently chairman of Speedway Benefits, a firm specializing in North America’s short tracks and drag strips.

The North Turn is a Daytona gem, full of NASCAR history and has been a community-favorite for years. This story was shot right after the locally-loved establishment almost burned down.

It may just look like any other beach, but Daytona Beach was the birthplace of NASCAR as we know it. In Off the Grid: Daytona, hosts Rutledge Wood & Kelli Stavast go back to where it all began & check out a local hot spot that commemorates the beach's place in racing history, Racing's North Turn.
