Dear Bill, I have to tell you that you have brought tears to my eyes this morning. I just found your video and watched it like I was glued to my chair. I grew up in LIttleton, NC and spent A LOT of time hanging around Mr. Tant's shop as a kid. There is parts of Mr. Tant's career/life that wasn't brought out in the video that I would like to share with you if you don't mind.

The shop that Mr. Tant was interviewed in was not his first shop in Littleton. His first shop was on the East of town and if I remember it correctly, it was an old "ripple tin" building behind a TV repair shop and a beauty salon. One reason I can remember this is my mom worked in the beauty salon in front of Mr. Tant's garage. There are so many good memories that come back to me from hanging around Mr. Tant's shop when I was a kid. Mr. Tant was always patient with me hanging around his shop after school and watching him work on customer's cars and trucks.

He had two of three employees at that time and it seems they were always busy and did really good work. There's a little more to the story about Mr. Tant's "tow truck" that I would like to share with you. That tow truck as it were served triple duty. It was Mr. Tant's daily driver to and from work every day, it was the shop truck to go get parts at some of the local parts stores and the tow truck for the #11 race car. #11 was hooked to the back of the truck with a tow bar, 3 and sometimes 4 guys (including Mr. Tant) would pile up in the front of the truck and a local man that worked at the Pepsi Cola bottling plant would ride in the race car to and from the races.

His job was to apply the brakes on the race car when they needed to stop. I know that sounds a little far fetched, but I promise you it's the facts as I remember them. Another thing about the two truck was that by the time I started hanging around the shop, the F-1 Ford didn't have a Ford motor in it.......it was a Buick V-8 engine mated to the original transmission in the truck. Part of the reason I remember this is my dad drove a 1956 Buck Special and I was pretty familiar with the engine in my dad's car and saw the hood up on the tow truck one day in the shop and put 2 and 2 together.

Mr. Tant was always quick with an answer to a good question, but he was also very quick with a "cheeky" answer if the question wasn't a good one. So I learned to spend more time watching than asking questions. Again, thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane.

When I was in grade school, mom and dad would pick me up as soon as school was over on Fridays and we would drive to Winston Salem NC to Bowman Gray Stadium. We cooked vienna sausages on the exhaust manifold and ate them with crackers.

At the stadium we would get french fries with vinegar on them and hot Dr Pepper on cold nights.

After the races we would drive to Krispy Kreme for a dozen doughnuts in
what is now historic Old Winston Salem. Krispy Kreme was across from the
giant coffee pot that a colonist used to hide out from the British in the 1700's.

After the races, we had glitter dust all over us from the track.
The smell of the racing fuel back then was the same smell at little tracks all over Florida and the South today.
Once you smell it, you never forget it.-Senor Honda

I talked with him briefly at the Living Legends museum April 15 2018.
His lifelong sponsorship started with a handshake at Long-Lewis Ford.
