From the earliest days of NASA, through when the Apollo astronauts would drive off from Cape Canaveral in their personal Corvettes, America’s pre-eminent space geeks have played around with vehicles that roll instead of fly. Here’s one of their latest creations, an electric vehicle that combines self- and remote-driving technology with the fun of turning four wheels.
Dubbed the Modular Robotic Vehicle, the platform was built by engineers at Johnson Space Center along with a smattering of automotive suppliers. The electricity from the battery feeds liquid-cooled electric motors mounted in each wheel, giving the buggy a top speed of 40 mph. Those wheels are mounted like chair casters, giving them each 180 degrees of turning ability and making the MRV as maneuverable as an Ikea shopping cart.
In theory, the MRV is testing new technologies that could be put to work on interplanetary rovers. But it has a more down-to-earth effect as well: Watching the video above will make every government employee wish their job was this fun.
