Lucky me! Early to mid sixties I had a chance to visit in Long Beach most every year. I'd always have to leave Sunday to be back at school, or work, Monday. A trip to Lions was a must. I'd buy a pit pass so I could get right up close. As a result I don't hear too well now. On one of those trips I hit the Jackpot. I got to meet the people that made a teenage kids dreams happen. A visit to Hot Rod Magazine's office got me a chance to meet, and shake hands with Robert Petersen, Karl Kohler, and Dennis Ellefson. A later chance meeting with Pete Millar who took me to his new home for lunch, then a visit with the genuine Temple McFlathead. Then, a visit to the shop/studio of Ed Roth on Slauson Blvd.

Those days are long gone. I'm sorry kids of today will never have such interesting characters for real life heroes.. Ever so grateful I did. There is one more. Nothing to do with hot rods at all. The man was Tex Puryear. He was probably the biggest fish in a very small pond that I ever knew. He, and his band performed every night for many years at a tiny night club called Hollywood on The Pike in Long Beach.

On August 17th, the second annual US 131 Dragway Racers Reunion was held at US 131 Motorsports Park. A great day of bench racing, a special nostalgia race, the Great Lakes Gasser group and some great bracket racing. Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids stepped up to sponsor this years event and it was a great time to meet old friends and make new ones.

Hauling Drag cars in the 60's

This video shows how race cars were transported to and from the race tracks back in the '60s. Most of the race cars, even some of touring professionals were carried on open trailers, ramp trucks, or pulled with tow bars. Today, 90% of drag cars are transported in enclosed trailers. Gone are the days of seeing beautiful race cars being towed down the highway.

This is really drag racing at its best. How I used to haul mine was open trailer and the car I used was my daily driver. Eveybody could relate and buy the stuff at the dealer on Monday and build there race cars. We had more money in the drag car then the trailer and tow vehicle put together 2 or 3 times as much in the drag car then the trailer and tow vehicle. To day you can't relate to it much anymore. This is why drag racing is dying a slow death.If I could go back in time I love to be in the late 50s and 60s. Even with not much money back then you could have fun. Today unless you are rich its pretty much over for the general public. To day they have 10 times more in the trailer and motorhome then the car.Beem me back to the 50s and 60s anyday.

Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, I knew half these guys (Well, me and 75% the boys in the valley). Dandy Dick Landy (who's dear mother was a saint), Dyno Don, Jungle Jim (Jungle Pam was a BABE!) Don "The Snake" Prudhomme (who always stopped by the Wednesday night Van Nuys Blvd drags) and that young Canadian kid, Dale Armstrong. We not only had the GREATEST drivers growing up, but they had the BEST nicknames! Even their cars had cool nicknames! Stardust, Blue Max, Little Red Wagon, Color Me Gone, Grumpy's Toy. Now I'm feeling old. But I'm smiling.
