What is the 1965 Plymouth Belvedere A990?

The A990 code was Chrysler’s internal engineering designation for a legendary, limited run of purpose-built drag racing machines. Only 101 examples of the Plymouth Belvedere were produced with this package for the 1965 model year. Chrysler did not build these cars for a casual cruise down Main Street or a Saturday night street race. They designed them strictly to dominate the NHRA Super Stock classes. Instead of a =322&model_id=7765&min_year=1965&max_year=1965&dis tance=50&per_page=30]typical muscle car, the A990 was a track titan sold straight through dealership networks to licensed racers who knew how to handle serious horsepower.

Key Specifications of the $112,750 Belvedere

This factory-built drag racer is one of the most meticulously documented and rarest surviving configuration types left in existence. Under the hood sits a massive 426 cubic-inch Race Hemi V8 engine, which was factory rated at 425 horsepower, though it was famously and grossly underrated. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an A833 four-speed manual transmission, making it one of only 11 examples ever produced with a row-your-own gearbox. The car is beautifully finished in its factory-correct White exterior paint, which perfectly complements the utilitarian tan cloth and vinyl bucket seats inside. Best of all, the odometer shows a mere 520 original miles, preserving this historic Mopar time capsule in near-showroom condition.

A Rare Survival Story Free From Track Abuse

While the A990 platform itself boasts a legendary pedigree on the drag strip, this particular white Belvedere achieved its value by staying entirely away from the race track. Most factory lightweights were cut up, modified, or driven to oblivion, but this car was spared from quarter-mile wear and tear. Instead, its remarkably low odometer reading turned it into a highly prized museum time capsule. Because it escaped competitive racing damage and modifications, it preserved a flawless blueprint of factory-original body lines and ultra-rare components that few other surviving A990s can match.

Extreme Factory Weight Reduction

To ensure total quarter-mile dominance, Plymouth put the A990 package on a brutal corporate diet. Thinned body panels included stamped steel front fenders, a specialized hood, and lightweight radiator supports. Engineers used exotic metals wherever they could, opting for a magnesium cross-ram intake manifold alongside aluminum cylinder heads and an aluminum water pump. The spartan interior features a complete rear-seat delete, missing armrests, no radio, no heater, and zero sound-deadening material. Even the heavy front seats were tossed out in favor of lightweight, minimalist buckets pulled straight from a Dodge A100 van.

Market Value: A Massive Win for the New Owner

Back in the day, the Hemi-powered =322&model_id=7765&min_year=1965&max_year=1965&dis tance=50&per_page=30]1965 Belvedere I was an expensive, exclusive factory drag racer. While a standard sedan cost around $2,400, the A990 package pushed the price to nearly $4,500. The mid-tier 426 Max Wedge Stage III cost $3,500, making the Hemi-powered lightweight Plymouth’s ultimate performance option

Today, the value of this particular Mopar powerhouse is deeply tied to its stellar preservation and history. The car spent years on formal display at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It later underwent an extensive, historically correct rotisserie restoration by the experts at Muscle Car Restorations in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The vehicle came to the auction block accompanied by roughly $160,000 in restoration receipts.

While top-tier A990 examples have previously pushed well past the $200,000 mark at major events, this $112,750 final price is an incredible value in the current market. When you consider the sheer rarity of a factory four-speed manual car, especially one of just 11 built with this exact lightweight setup, the buyer walked away with a massive win. Finding a factory-built legend of this caliber for less than the actual cost of its restoration is the kind of deal every gearhead dreams about.
