Default currently looking for a first car under 10k and I stumbled across a couple police pa

Hey guys, I’m currently looking for a first car under 10k and I stumbled across a couple police package Chargers from with the 2013 body style. They have anywhere from 60 to 90 k miles. I have heard some issues people had with reliablility because they are rough driven cop cars but is this a big issue or one that can be avoided? Also are they safe? I was looking through Carfax and some don’t seem to have passenger airbags. Could I get someone more experienced with these cars opinion?

My 2013 was a former FHP car and had 143K, picked up at an auction. High, yes, but not too bad since it's likely to be a lot of miles cruising on the highways (there's some info about checking engine idle hours and some other parameters that indicated my car was not run crazy ). The interior was in pretty good shape - no seat rips/crazy stains and not dings, rust, etc. Took it to my usual mechanic to do their purchase-type inspection and it was nothing out of the ordinary: Brakes needed replacing, rear tires worn. Had a clunk up front which meant control arms had to be replaced. Likely that you *might* find similar things. But the oil/coolant/etc was good. No signs of wear and tear on the engine.

I would say they are safe. I don't know about the airbag issue - you can run the VIN through a Dodge site and get the build info (mine lists side airbags for front seats as well as side curtain). I'll try to dig up the link if you can't find it searching the forums. A Challenger owner I spoke to who was a former Sheriff's Deputy said that most departments are very diligent about upkeep and send the nasty email reminders to officers if they become late, even so far as not letting them take a vehicle out until it's addressed. Don't know if that holds true for all organizations, but I would imagine that people who put their lives on the line are going to be in cars that are as safe as possible.

Hope this helps.

-John
