3.09 limited slip diff ..... INSTALLED

OMG! Whooped my ass! Thought I could sneak the old one out passed the Solo exhaust center section....NOPE! So had to drop it too. UGH!

Pulled the 8 driveshaft bolts which are T-50's and LOTS of locktite! Then 2 15mm bolts at the diff front and 2 21mm bolts at the rear. Take the front 2 15mm bolts out, slide a jack under the diff, using a ratchet wrench alternate between loosening the 2 bolts and pushing the diff forward.

You're gonna leave the 21mm bolts in the frame they're captive unless you drop the cradle. Lower the jack, use a pry bar and pop the axles out and the diff is out!

Slide the new one under the car, wrestle with it to get it up on the jack and pop the axles in, jack up back in place. Start by getting the 2 21mm bolts back into the new diffs bolt holes and using the 21mm ratchet wrench draw it in! Make sure you don't forget the 2 isolation pads

for the front bolts that go between the diff and frame, slide them in now and center them with the 15mm bolts. Keep drawing the diff in with the 21mm bolts till you can get the 15mm ones to start threading in. Snug them up then tighten the 21mm bolts and then go back and tighten the

2 15mm ones up. Raise the drive shaft and using lock tite again on each of the T-50 bolts tighten them up real good.

Take a break! Then after the break put your exhaust back up and fill the diff with your favorite diff fluid. BTW, the new diff comes FULL from the factory! But I opted for the BND magic gear oil kit containing break in oil and then leave in oil. Quiet as a mouse!

Initial thoughts on the first drive, I like it! The car feels much more responsive! Don't have to use near the same amount of throttle as before and sport mode is MUCH more funner! I didn't beat on it or go over 80 cause it needs to break in yet. But after a 50 mile drive around it feels and sounds great!

I wish they had a 3.42 gear set cause IMHO THAT would be awesome! The 3.70's maaay be ok for a 5.7 but I think the 3.90's may be a bit much. The 3.09's are a lot nicer then the stock 2.62's that's for damn sure! Huge improvement.

Highly recommend this mod for any R/T owners!

FYI: yes, any rear-end swap will require that the rear-end ratio be updated (with a tuner or similar device) in the car's computer (on the older LXs). However, that is something the service department at any Dodge dealership can easily do if a tuner is not available or within the budget. The dealership option makes the most sense IMHO when the rear-end gear update is the only reason for purchasing a tuner. Save that money and go to the local dealership instead.

Now, I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention the possibility that some dealerships may want to charge much more money to do this tune update than others. So anyone considering this option would do well to call around and get some quotes or unofficial estimates before going to any one in particular. Or even go in person and say you're there for a recall check, and while they're looking at it, mention you'll be swapping out the rear-end soon and ask what it might cost to bring to them for the TCM update.

Hell, he might tell you to come by on a dead afternoon and they'll do it gratis...who knows. But you can bet your bottom dollar that there are some out there that would try to squeeze every last penny out of you for such a non-std. service, and those are the ones you'd obviously want to avoid, if at all possible.
