Default Tired of your exhaust banging on the cross members?

Tired of your exhaust banging on the cross members? How many times have people with aftermarket exhausts complained about the pipes banging on the cross members, or about hearing weird sounds from under the seats when driving on bumpy roads? The usual fix is remove the cross members and add washers above them to create a little extra space for the pipes. I have done this, but with limited success. I came up with a fix last last weekend and have given it a week of driving several hundred miles to ensure it worked.

I bought two large "S" hooks (2.75" long/ .25" thick) at the hardware store and opened the ends up a bit and slid on some shrink wrap then closed them back up. Next I removed the two rubber hangers just behind the mid mufflers and with a big pair of channel lock pliers fitted the hook ends to the studs the hangers slip over to ensure they would fit.

I then put the rubber hangers in my vice and using a hack saw cut a 1/4" to 5/16" thick slice out of the center of the hangers. I then installed one rubber hanger half, the hook, then the other rubber hanger half.

The weight of the exhaust system is held by both the S hook and the rubber hangers. When you get on bumpy stretches of road that make the exhaust flop up and down, the S hook stops the movement and the banging. Using 1/2 of the rubber hanger on either side of the S hook keeps it from rattling around.Attached Thumbnails
