P1 Motorsports adds Mercedes entry in IMSA Endurance Cup
[h=2]P1 Motorsports adds entry in IMSA Endurance Cup[/h] Wednesday, 27 December 2017
A year after making its debut in IMSA Prototype Challenge, P1 Motorsports will add a single-car GT Daytona effort in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship's North American Endurance Cup races in 2018. The team's PC drivers – Kenton Koch, Robby Foley, Juan "JC" Perez and team newcomer Loris Spinelli – will pilot the Mercedes-AMG GT3.
"We came into the 2017 racing season with one goal on our mind," team manager Alberto Pena said. "Get the team and JC up to speed to run Daytona. We've been planning this for over a year, and it's been a group effort since day one.
"We asked those who have driven most of the GT3 cars out there, and we think we made a very educated decision [with Mercedes] and are very happy with the path our program has taken so far."
In the team's debut season in Prototype Challenge, Koch finished second in overall in the LMP3 class championship despite missing the first two rounds.
"I am super excited to be running with P1 [Motorsports] again in 2018," he said. "This time in GTD as well as LMP3. We have had great history together and really think we can do well. The team has shown tremendous growth and performance in only its first year of operation. I'm truly honored to be a part of this team as it continues to grow.
"Last time I raced the 24 was in LMPC, and we were lucky enough to win. With P1, I'm more than confident we will have a shot, especially with the driver line up we have."
In 2018, PC Motorsports will expand to three LMP3 cars in PC with multiple driver combinations. Matthew Dicken, a series rookie last season, will be joined by sports car veteran Corey Lewis, who is also expected to compete in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as well, in the No. 17 Ligier JS P3. Koch will partner with Joel Janco, who has participated in the series in the MPC division for many years.
Jim Garrett, who returns after a few years' hiatus, will be joined by Foley in the No. 42. Foley, who got his start with P1 Motorsports at Watkins Glen last season, only participated in three events, but earned two podium finishes in his debut season.
