I never buy oem and never have an issue, the dealers are legal scam and fraud artists. Rock auto is one of my go too's even in Canada it's still a chunk off my parts bill. If I need my mechanic it's a 70.00 hr rate versus most dealers and service centers at 160.00 hourly rate. I'm actually looking at getting a 2000 to 2006 S500 OR S600 haven't decided yet. I was looking at 2007 and 2008 s550 and S600 but the S550 I heard has an inferior sprocket in the timing chain that is doomed to fail without warning.

Oh hell yes... Id do what you did...... I have a volvo .... I do the same..... First line aftermarket/OEM equivalents....or better even. Am not scared of owning a Euro car. Plus i have a Volvo specialist if i need them who charges CA$105/hr vs dealer @ CA$130/hr .... Btw am in Canada. I get parts from IPD. On the flip side, if anyone wanna run a Euro car on a budget ..... Theres always Rockauto for common wear and tear parts like bearings and brakes ......bottom line .... euro or japanese or whatever...... They cost abt the same to own.....on a base to mid level trimmed car or SUV i find.

I've done almost all my own work on my very early Aston Martin DB9 over the last 2 years and in summary I've spent about £1600 with a saving of approximately £5-6000. I used, whenever appropriate, Ebay and online stores to source parts and consumables. I don't believe that the car has in anyway "suffered" from this approach apart from not having a load of official dealer stamps and receipts but given that this is a 13 year old vehicle and was bought cheap in the first place I don't think it's all that important. Meanwhile I've been able to enjoy one of my lifelong ambitions without going bankrupt! You must do your research beforehand, including AM resources, forums and YouTube videos, but diy is most definitely the way to go to run a high end car without a top dollar job!

The problem with people and high end cars and where YOU as the DIY has a huge advantage is you are willing to do the work. Most people that can afford these things in the first place either works lots of hours or trust fund/lottery winners with excuses a mile long about their own abilities. This is where you can buy a late model MBZ or BMW, especially S class, Bangle B7's which many people claim to "hate" and pretty much all MBZ AMG's because they devalue in a hurry once driven off the lot. Do the work your self, buy the parts you need where you can save money and you'll always save on labor cost. Which is why these cars are typically leased.




Everybody has the ability especially if you can actually drive a car which I assume everybody posting here can legally. Tools can be bought or rented, some DIY shops exist, etc. I use a DIY shop. It's 40 miles one way but I didn't have to buy any tools and I get access to a lift, tire changer, drill press, bench vices, tools including Snap On; anything I need to get the job done. Rates are reasonable as well, even storage is cheap.
