Default Got some questions about Dual Sports / street legal dirt bikes

Can you make regular dirt bikes street legal?
I looked around and seen a few dual sports on craigslist but not to many.

What would be your best advice on a street legal style dirt bike.

Im leaving for the army in a month and im going to grab a quick detailing job with a wholesale guy and I dont want to battle my aunt for the car.
I had to sell mine when I moved in with them and my uncle is leaving for NC for awhile.
So I need a cheap ride for a month.. unless one of you guys wants to rent me a motorcycle

Thank you Bike Tech.
Ill be on a 04+ R1 when I get back from basic training

newer (i think 2001 and up) dirtbikes CANNOT be made street legal, its printed into the frames that they are for offroad use only. (RR models that is i think atleast?)

trailbike like honda 450x's n shit can be made streetlegal, doubt u wanna spend much though for a bike ur only going to have a month tho, so i have no clue. lol

mostly it can be done, but its a bitch and will take way longer than a month to be pulled off. you have to have an inspecter from the dmv go over your mods and everything must have papers showing where you bought it and stuff.

easiest way is to order a kit, but they are over priced for what you get. but make getting thru the dmv easier because you have proof its been done before.

just buy a scooter man. they are cheap as hell.

how much you looking to spend? You CAN make a dirt bike street legal, bajadesigns.com makes complete kits for bikes and atv's that can include everything needed to make your bike legal.
Baja Designs Dual Sport Kit Features:
# Quick Release: All Baja Designs Dual Sport Kits incorporate multi-pin connectors in the wiring harness at the front of the bike and under the seat. This means that once installed, removal & reinstallation of the kit can be accomplished in just a few minutes without having to identify any individual wires. This feature is great for dual sport bikes that get raced off-road or used for motocross. Simply unbolt & unplug the "dual sport fender" and the "dual sport headlight" then install a stock fender and front number plate in their place (extra fender only supplied in '03-on WR kit.)
# Easy Installation: All front accesories (headlight, turn signals, horn, flasher relay, etc.) are pre-attached and pre-wired eliminating the need to identify and connect most individual wires. On kickstart models, these accesories includes a small nicad battery & rectifier/regulator.
# Turn Signal Options: You may choose to upgrade the standard turn signals (all 4 or just 2) provided with any Baja Designs dual sport kit to LED flushmount or LED ministalk turn signals. Add the "turn signal upgrade" in the "Related Items" category to your cart when ordering.
# Quality: Our Dual Sport Kits include a halogen headlight, rugged flexible turn signals , and a modern looking, vibration-resistant LED taillight *. The provided OEM style handlebar switch assembly features a push-to-cancel turn signal button and integrated high-beam indicator.

*Not all kits include LED taillight

* All states require DOT tires; some states have additional requirements such as a speedometer/odometer, mirrors, or a brake light switch actuated by the front brake lever (in addition to the rear brake light switch that comes with all dual sport kits). Please check your local motor vehicle department for your individual state's requirements.
* Dual Sporting an off-road bike is not legal in all states. Check with local laws before ordering.

I guess im looking to spend 2,000 ish.
I seen some decent dirt bikes for around 1,000
Im not looking for nothing special.

Its just I had to sell my car and leave my apartment to move back in with my uncle since his health was bad. Well everything is good now and I just used either his car or my aunts with no issues. But now he is going to NC and I just got a detailing job to get back into the sun for the next month before I leave and im tired of the stress of making plans around my aunt and I.
My aunts daughter in law lives with us but her car seems to special for any one to use it seems.

I figured "fuck it" ill get a dirtbike/dual sport and get good mpg.. get to where I need to be.. have fun on 2 wheels again and leave it with a friend of mine to play with when I leave because even tho he has a truck/R1 I know he can use a good backup for his long drive to work.

Plus hes a MIT grad tech and a parts sales guy at Barneys so I know it will be well taken care of. Plus hes a great friend and thats where my bike is going to stay when I get deployed. And if im killed.. hes going to take care of it from there on out.
