That was the Daytona 200 in 2001. There are 2 waves that are sent off on the start... Scott Russell had qualified at the begining of the 1st wave on the Ducati (#4), since he was Mr. Daytona and had at the time 5 Daytona 200 wins.

So Imagine nearly 40 bikes, all doing a drag race type launch & one of the lead riders stalling as you're about to grab 2nd gear...

Scott retired after that incident... it damn near killed him and took him a long time to recover from multiple surgeries...

Scott Russell... good old GA homeboy... aka "The Screaming Chief"

I had the pleasure to watch & cheer for him from the stands @ Daytona in 1995 as he lowsided on the horse shoe leading the race & falling to the back of the field. Handing Carl Fogarty a good 40 sec lead... He remounted and won the race by over a minute. He lad lapped everyone except Fogarty...
