i own a 1998 yamaha vmax. when the motor is running it puts of a pretty strong smell. kinda smells like exhaust fumes. but its really strong. after riding it you can smell it on my clothes or in the garage. can someone give me a few ideas on what might be causing it. i was thinking it might be running to rich? thanks

Does it smell like fuel? It could be running really rich.

 

did it ever sit for a long time?
Check your spark plugs first. If they're fouled, dark, wet, thats most likely your main problem.

I allways thought this came with the package of riding a motorcycle...

It may be just me....but you are sitting on a motor

 

check your mixture.... you should have the normal exhaust fumes but it it starts to irritate your eyes and throat you are running rich.

 

yeah im starting to think it is running to rich. its definatly alot stronger smell than a normal bike puts off. thanks
