LARGO - The two motorcyclists apparently didn't know each other, but they met on the roads of Largo on Monday night and decided to race, Largo police said.
On 66th Street, they waited for the green light at Ulmerton Road about 7:45 p.m., Largo police said. Allen Ppool, 36, rode a 1993 Kawasaki motorcycle; Paul Scheid, 36, was on a 2003 Suzuki.
Side by side, the two motorcycles raced south in the median lane, quickly exceeding 100 mph, Largo police Capt. Glenn Smith said.
About three-quarters of a mile down the road, Iram Memon, headed the other direction in a Toyota Camry, started to turn left into the parking lot of a Kash n' Karry at 13000 66th St., police said.
Ppool collided with the side of Memon's car and was thrown 97 feet, police said. "At that speed, I'm sure she didn't even see him," Smith said.
Ppool, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Northside Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. His family could not be reached for comment.
Memon was taken to Bayfront Medical Center and was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Scheid, uninjured, drove away, police said.
He returned to the scene 51 minutes later, after going to see his father and getting gas for his motorcycle, the arrest report said. He told officers that he tried to call 911 "but couldn't talk because of his helmet," the report said.
He was arrested on charges of racing, a misdemeanor, and of failing to render aid, a felony. It was Scheid's first arrest in Florida, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records.
Scheid has been ticketed for speeding on numerous occasions, records show. He was cited each year for speeding between 1999 and 2002.
Ppool had several moving violations on his driving record, including operating a vehicle without a proper license and three speeding violations.
A woman at Scheid's house in Clearwater said a lawyer told her not to comment.
Times researcher Carolyn Edds contributed to this report.

One of the consequences of such notions as "entitlements" is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.”

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.
