NASCAR Legend Waddell Wilson was initially known for having the best engines at Ford powerhouse Holman Moody in the 1960's but quickly rose to prominence as a dominating double duty crew chief AND engine builder with the 28 Ranier Racing team in the 70's and 80's. Waddell is responsible for many iconic tales of racing, including the Gray Ghost driven by Buddy Baker in 1980, Bobby Allison's trick Pontiac LeMans, and Cale Yarborough's famous 200 mph Daytona flight in the Hardees' car.

We meet up with Waddell at the Holman Moody shop for him to check out some of the old engine building machinery he used to use, see a real GT40 and reminisce on his time as a crew member for the race team. He came prepared with notes and we learn the chronological history of the legend himself!

From the old SPEED channel, Jeff Hammond hosts this profile on the career of NASCAR engine builder and crew chief Waddell Wilson. He started his career at Holman Moody working on cars for Fireball Roberts and David Pearson. Wilson moved to L.G. Dewitt's shop and won the NASCAR Cup championship in 1973 and the Daytona 500 in 1975. Next he moved to Harry Ranier's team winning 1980 Daytona 500 with Buddy Baker. In 1982 a Wilson prepared car set the first official 200 mph lap at Talladega. In 1983 and 1984 Wilson powered cars won back to back Daytona 500's with Cale Yarborough. He closed out his career working for Rick Hendrick working on cars for Darrell Waltrip and Geoff Bodine.

Before the 1983 Daytona 500, Cale Yarborough flipped his car in qualifying, even though he was on pace to set a blistering lap time. Waddell Wilson was his crew chief at the time and was faced with a decision to make: fix the car or find a new one. The new one they found was a show car in Hardee's parking lot. They built the Pontiac Lemans and had it ready to go before the duels, where Cale raced his way in to the Great American race, in one of the wildest journeys during Speedweeks in NASCAR history.
