M24 Hour 19: Ferrari back on top after briefly losing lead to pit issue Rainier Ehrhardt/Motorsport Images

The 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours continues to deliver constant drama. After 19 hours of racing, the race for the win is still very much on.

The Hypercar lead battle reignited again during Hour 19, when the No. 51 Ferrari lost its lead to an issue in the pits.

When Antonio Giovanazzi came in for stop number 23 to hand over to Alessandro Pier Guidi, who climbed in and couldn’t get the car fired. He had to endure an agonising wait for a full power cycle to be completed before leaving his pit box.

By the time he left, the No. 8 Toyota had gone past to retake the lead on pit lane. To make matters worse, the team appears to have a radio issue. Pier Guidi can hear the pit wall, but they can’t hear him.

Sebastien Buemi held a 4.4-second lead when the pair rejoined, the Swiss on older tyres but pushing hard. The lead didn’t last though, as Pier Guidi reeled in Buemi and made a bold move around the outside at the second Mulsanne Chicane to put Ferrari back on top. The move caused the Ferrari garage to erupt. The Toyota pit meanwhile, is far more subdued, the team struggling to find the ultimate pace to match and better the No. 51 at this stage of the race.

From there it was a chase through traffic and a lengthy slow zone until the end of the hour. It is game on once again!

In the other classes, Inter Europol’s lead has extended to 1 minute 37 seconds over the No. 41 WRT ORECA in LMP2.GTE Am is still too close to call. Iron Dames’ Porsche (with Rahel Frey driving) now leads by 20 seconds over the ORT by TF Sport Aston Martin. Charlie Eastwood has been mercurial throughout the morning and ensured the Omani-flagged crew are in with a chance. Corvette remains third a further 27 seconds back. This battle changes at each pit cycle. It looks set to go down to the wire.

The team that has lost the most time in the most recent hour is the ‘Rexy’ Porsche. The Project 1 crew has been so strong all race, but late on, with PJ Hyett trying to burn his remaining drive time, he has struggled to keep up and dropped the car 1 minute 41 seconds off the class lead.#

2023 LM24, Hour 20: Ferrari Back To Work

Michael Fassbender's bid for GTE Am victory ends with shunt

11 June 2023, 11:12 AM
There’s no change to report at the head of the field, with four hours left in the 91st annual 24 Hours of Le Mans – the Centenary Edition.

In the last hour, Alessandro Pier Guidi drove the #51 Ferrari AF Corse 499P to the lead after some drama trying to get the car started on its last pit stop.

After the most recent pit stops, Pier Guidi went gone back to work and had built a ten-second lead over the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 Hybrid.

The #8 Toyota has changed hands from Sebastien Buemi to Brendon Hartley, and just recently, has pitted for fuel earlier than expected. It takes the top two off the same pit stop schedule. After the #51 Ferrari pitted, the gap is less than four seconds, and James Calado is now behind the wheel.

Earl Bamber is still third overall in the #2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R, still towards the tail end of the lead lap. The #3 Cadillac of Renger van der Zande is fourth, one lap off the lead and one lap ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne in the #93 Peugeot TotalEnergies 9X8.

The #6 Porsche Penske Motorsports 963 has gone to the garage for a third time in recent hours, this time to change a faulty hybrid system.

At the very top of the hour, the #311 Action Express Racing Cadillac of Jack Aitken – who began the race with a spectacular wreck at the first Mulsanne Chicane – spun into the gravel at the same spot.

Inter Europol Competition and the #34 Oreca 07-Gibson still leads LMP2. Fabio Scherer is digging deep after a foot injury sustained during the week.

But keep an eye on the notice board – the #34’s Race Director has just been summoned to Race Control for a potential improper pit stop procedure.

Louis Deletraz is running second still in the #41 Team WRT Oreca and Neel Jani is taking over the #30 Team Duqueine Oreca, in third, while Paul-Loup Chatin is doing likewise in the IDEC Sport #48.

James Allen runs 13th in LMP2 overall and his #45 Algarve Pro Racing Oreca continues to lead LMP2 Pro-Am.
Ben Keating handed over his first-placed #33 Corvette C8.R to Nicolas Varrone, dropping Corvette Racing car to third.

This left Sarah Bovy leading in the Iron Dames Porsche, albeit with a reduced margin: Michael Dinan was closing in on Bovy, just two seconds away. Bovy responded though, digging deep, the striking #85 pink Porsche looking well planted on the improving track surface.

The Belgian Iron Dame would extend the gap to over five seconds, a further 30 seconds the gap from the Aston Martin to Varrone’s charging Corvette.

Running in fourth, Project 1-AO’s ‘Rexy’ Porsche 911 RSR-19 is being dropped by the leading battle. Gunnar Jeannette is now aboard and managing a gap of two minutes to the Corvette, but still in touch with the race with four hours racing left.

GR Racing rounds off the top five with Riccardo Pera having been back at the helm of the #86 Porsche, another decent recovery for the car from the Italian’s costly off-road excursion on Saturday evening.

With four hours and 24 minutes to go, Michael Fassbender spun his #911 Proton Competition Porsche out at Karting Corner and slammed rear-right first into the tyre barriers. Fassbender drove the car back to the pits but was frustrated with his unforced error, and now all four Proton Competition Porsches have retired from the race.

LM24 Hour 20: Toyota slashes Ferrari lead

The lead battle is still hot at the Le Mans 24 Hours with 4 hours remaining. The No. 51 Ferrari 499P still leads but the gap is down to just 1.1 seconds after being 19 for most of the hour. The gap came down because Toyota opted to pit the No. 8 a lap early during a slow zone period, to gain time.

It worked and Brendon Hartley is right behind James Calado, who is now back aboard the leading 499P. Will the Kiwi find enough pace in his GR010 to make a pass for the lead? The slow zone in question was called for an off at the end of the Porsche Curves for Michael Fassbender. The movie star, in heartbreaking fashion, ended up losing the rear end and slapping the tyres on the driver’s left hard.

Fassbender made it back to the pits, but the damage to the right-rear corner was too heavy for the car to continue. It was the 11th GTE Am retirement and was a truly gutting moment for the entire Proton crew, which was on course for a top-10 finish. It’s been a really challenging race for Christian Ried’s team, with four cars crashing out.

Up front in GTE Am, Iron Dames leads but the gap to the ORT by TF Aston Martin is just 4.9 seconds. It’s Sarah Bovy vs Michael Dinan, with both drivers trading fast times. The Corvette, with Nico Varrone in for what will likely be his final stint, is a further 30 seconds down the road.

LMP2 is still a two-horse race between the No. 34 Inter Europol ORECA and the No. 41 WRT ORECA, with the Polish outfit firmly in control with a lead of 49 seconds. So far, it’s been an incredible performance from the plucky team owned by a Polish bakery. Fabio Scherer, nursing an injured foot after being run over by the Corvette, is back in the car now with the end in sight.

LM24, Hour 21

2023 LM24, Hour 21: LMP2 & GTE Am Battles Heating Up

#51 Ferrari 499P maintains ten-second advantage overall as Corvette Racing, Inter Europol lead their classes

11 June 2023, 12:13 PM
The #51 Ferrari AF Corse 499P continues to lead overall and in the Hypercar class. James Calado has a lead of 13.8 seconds to the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 HYBRID which is currently being driven by Brendon Hartley.

Hartley spent much of this past hour trying to drive away from the #50 Ferrari, which is no longer a factor for the win – but Miguel Molina was driving at enough of a pace to not only get a lap back, but also put pressure on the Toyota and potentially disrupt Hartley’s pursuit of Calado.

In a steady third is the #2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R, with Alex Lynn in the cockpit.

There wasn’t much drama in the Hypercar ranks, but some teams still have work to do just to get to the chequered flag. The #93 Peugeot TotalEnergies 9X8 had to go back to the garage but it was a quick repair and Jean-Eric Vergne is still fifth overall, behind the #3 Cadillac of Renger van der Zande.

The #94 Peugeot has also been taken back to the garage at the top of the hour, to replace the steering rack.

Hertz Team JOTA’s #38 Porsche 963 has spent several hours in and out of the garage and is now trying just to be ready to take the chequered flag.

It’s a bit more spirited in LMP2, where Inter Europol Competition is potentially three hours away from its biggest-ever win as a privateer team – the only LMP2 team in the FIA World Endurance Championship that has no ties to any prospective hypercar programme!

But that win was put into mild jeopardy when the green and yellow #34 Oreca 07-Gibson was given a drive-through penalty for overtaking two cars under the Safety Car.

This cut the lead down from 47 to 15 seconds to the #41 Team WRT Oreca, which is running second and pounding on the door of a come-from-behind victory if it can continue to keep the pressure on the Turbo Bakers’ Oreca.

Fabio Scherer, whose foot was run over after the first pit stop of the race, has gotten out of the cockpit and Albert Costa now leads with Robert Kubica trailing him in the Team WRT #41.

Either way, unless there’s a disaster that strikes either of the top two in LMP2, the racing fans of Poland will have a winner to be proud of – either a national racing hero who’s achieved success at the pinnacle of motorsport, or one of endurance racing’s most spirited and determined underdog teams!

There’s also been a change for third: LMP2 polesitter Paul Loup Chatin has caught and passed Neel Jani, putting the Delage-sponsored IDEC Sport #48 Oreca ahead of the black and green #30 of Team Duqueine, now fourth.

Corvette Racing, once down and out, lead GTE-Am with three hours to go.

A stellar 3:50.439 was Nicolas Varrone’s best lap time as he forged ahead to gap the rest of the GTE-Am field and neutralise any time required for the #33 Corvette’s final fuel stop.

The time was quicker than the fastest GTE-Am qualifying time for the car, a 3:51.8 set by Nicky Catsburg on Wednesday evening. The cycle of the top three runners’ strategy suggested that the Iron Dames Porsche would not require a final fuel stop, but the pace of the #85 Porsche seems simply unable to match that of the charging Corvette.

Having pitted to swap Michael Dinan for Ahmad Al-Harthy, the ORT by TF Aston Martin appears to be the trailing car of the top three, Al-Harthy now working out his minimum seat time – he is quick among his peers, at the very least, but he’ll need to dig deep.

Matteo Cairolli’s Project 1-AO Porsche still runs fourth, and although there is half a WEC round left to run, ‘Rexy’ is looking like she will need some luck now to stand a chance of making the GTE-Am podium.

The rate of attrition in class now extends to Daniel Serra, who parked the fluorescent yellow #57 Kessel Racing Ferrari. It’s not yet classified as a retirement, but it hasn’t resumed since Serra went off.

After a run that seemed to be bullet-proof, the Garage 56 entry has finally succumbed to its first issue.

Jenson Button parked the #24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 with a suspected gearbox failure. “We have a drive line issue and the team is working to repair it now. The goal remains to finish the race,” said Garage 56 Project Leader, Chad Knaus.

The Hendrick Motorsports team has time to replace the gearbox to make the finish of the race, but it’s taking some time and the car is in the garage for nearly 50 minutes as of this report.

But to make it 20 hours before suffering any significant mechanical drama – that’s to be commended from the Garage 56 NASCAR project!

LM24 Hour 21: No 51. Ferrari once again pulling away

Into the 22nd hour we go, and in every class this race continues to deliver the goods. The Ferrari vs Toyota battle in Hypercar is ongoing, with the leading No. 51 499P of James Calado edging away from Brendon Hartley in the No. 8 GR010 during the hour.

The gap is now 13 seconds, in part because Hartley had to deal with the No. 50 sister Ferrari of Miguel Molina, multiple laps down, putting the pressure on from behind. Brendon Hartley was asked by the team on the pit wall if he is physically capable of doing a quad stint. Without hesitation, the answer was “yes!”LMP2 meanwhile, has seen drama hit the leading No. 34 Inter Europol ORECA. The team was handed a drive-through for overtaking under yellow, which brought the lead gap down from over 50 seconds to 21 by the end of the hour. Can Robert Kubica in the No. 41 WRT ORECA respond and find a way to catch and pass the No. 34?

GTE Am is now Corvette’s race to lose. Since regaining the two laps lost early in the race, the driving has been outstanding all day so far. Nico Varonne in particular has played a huge role in getting Corvette back in the race. The young Argentinan in the hour set a blistering 3m40.439 as part of a string of fast laps as part of his attempt to create a lead gap larger than the length of a pit stop How fast is that? It was the fastest GTE lap of the event, including Qualifying and Hyperpole. A staggering lap from the Corvette newcomer, a perfect response to his incident in practice.

Behind Varrone, Sarah Bovy is second and losing seconds each lap to the C8.R in the Iron Dames Porsche. Ahmad Al Harthy, another Bronze, is also losing time in the ORT by TF Vantage to Varrone. It’s nevertheless been a superb performance from Bovy and Al Harthy so far, keeping their teams in the running while so many of the other teams in the class faulted.

There were multiple mechanical woes for cars in the hour. Both Peugeots spent time in the garage, the No. 93 for a nose change and to fix a lack of hydraulic pressure. The sister car meanwhile, ended up in its garage for a steering rack change.

The Garage 56 NASCAR Cup Camaro has also spent much of the last hour in its pit box, the Hendrick Team replacing the car’s gearbox. After 20 hours of racing, it was the first notable mechanical issue for the car.

2023 LM24, Hour 22: Down To Two

Garage 56 NASCAR Camaro fighting to make the chequered flag after driveline issues

11 June 2023, 1:21 PM
Two hours remain in the Centenary 24 Hours of Le Mans, and now, two cars remain on the lead lap and the fight for the overall victory in the most anticipated event in endurance sportscar racing.

We’ve passed 309 laps completed without any Safety Car interventions in the last 12-plus hours.

The #51 Ferrari AF Corse 499P is not just in a race against the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 HYBRID, it’s in a race towards history.

Ferrari’s Antonio Giovinazzi has a lead of just 9.610 from Toyota’s Brendon Hartley, who is wrapping up a gruelling quad-stint and giving it his all to chase down the leader.

The two Cadillac Racing Cadillac V-Series.Rs run third and fourth, with the blue #2 of Richard Westbrook a lap ahead of the gold #3 of Renger van der Zande.

The #50 Ferrari has climbed back to fifth overall, Nicklas Nielsen is now aboard and eager to salvage a good result.

Both Peugeot TotalEnergies 9X8s have had to spend significant time in the garage, the #94 for a change of steering rack, and most recently, the #93 for a hydraulics issue which has ruled it out of a top-five finish overall.

Albert Costa is aboard the #34 Inter Europol Competition Oreca 07-Gibson which has led LMP2 for most of the day and is just two hours away from a monumental victory.

Costa leads Robert Kubica in the Team WRT #41 Oreca by 21 seconds.

Paul Loup Chatin has broken away in third place aboard the #48 IDEC Sport Oreca, leaving the #30 Team Duqueine Oreca down in fourth with Neel Jani driving.

Two LMP2 cars buried down the order, the #22 United Autosports Oreca and the #39 Graff Racing Oreca, have gone to the garage for service before the top of the hour as now, simply finishing the race is the priority.
Nicky Catsburg is keeping the pressure on in the #33 Corvette Racing C8.R to stretch his lead to 77 seconds over the Iron Dames Porsche.

Michelle Gatting is now at the wheel of the #85 Porsche, the schedule for which seems unlikely to need a late splash for fuel at the final round of stops.

Charlie Eastwood is applying the pressure to the Iron Dames crew, reducing the gap by a second a lap in the #25 ORT by TF Aston Martin, pulling away from Matteo Cairoli in the #56 Project 1-AO Porsche in fourth.

A solid recovery in fifth for the GR Racing Porsche is being consolidated by Ben Barker. The perpetually-quick British driver is running consistently in the 3:53’s now and reducing the gap to the Project 1 Porsche and fourth place. A finish here would, in itself, deliver a well-earned reward for the underdog team that has always raced hard at Le Mans – but found results elusive.

Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is back on track, gearbox replaced. Mike Rockenfeller has shaken down the car and after another 15-minute trip to the garage, the #24 Camaro is ready to run to the finish!

LM24 Hour 22: Lead positions held as conclusion of the race nears

Hour 22 was very much a holding hour. With two hours to go, it feels like this race is still yet to reach its crescendo. But for now, the lead battles in each category are static.

The No. 51 Ferrari 499P out front has Antonio Giovanazzi aboard. He is being chased by Brendon Hartley in the No. 8 Toyota GR010. Hartley, amid a quad stint, has the gap to the Italian in front around 10 seconds. It’s so tight, any error, even a minor one, could change everything at this point. A grandstand finish seems likely.

In LMP2 it’s the same as the previous hour, after serving its penalty, the No. 34 Inter Europol ORECA is managing its gap to the chasing WRT ORECA. The gap between Albert Costa and Robert Kubica is still around 20 seconds.
GTE Am meanwhile is still the Corvette show, the US-flagged team having changed driver for the last time. After a heroic stint from Nico Varrone, who was mobbed by the team after climbing out the C8.R, it’s now down to Nicky Catsburg to bring the car home. Iron Dames’ Porsche and the ORT by TF Sport Aston complete the top three, but are over a minute behind.

As for Hendrick Motorsports’ Camaro ZL1, it’s back out on track after a lengthy gearbox change. Mike Rockenfeller is aboard and down in 39th overall.

2023 LM24, Hour 23: Toyota Falls At The Penultimate Hurdle!

It's now clear track ahead for Ferrari's overall victory, after Ryo Hirakawa crashes at Arnage Corner

11 June 2023, 2:19 PM
What promised to be an all-time classic finish to the Centenary Edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans has completely blown up with one hour and 45 minutes to go!

Ryo Hirakawa had just boarded the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 HYBRID, entrusted to take the final stint after Brendon Hartley was finished with a quadruple-stint.

Race engineer Ryan Dingle had been in constant communication with all three of his drivers in the #8 car to manage the brake balance.

This would prove prophetic in time, when Hirakawa, on used Michelin rubber, locked up the rear wheels in the braking zone at Arnage Corner, spun off to the left and bounced off the guardrail sustaining cosmetic damage to the front and rear. Hirakawa pitted again for damage repairs.

Barring a monumental collapse, Ferrari is now on track to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time since 1965.

The spin and subsequent pit stop for the #8 has given the race-leading #51 Ferrari AF Corse 499P of Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado, and Antonio Giovinazzi a lead of over three minutes. Giovinazzi’s time aboard the wheel has finished and Pier Guidi, who has been the star driver of this car for most of the race, rightfully will take it to the chequered flag.

All he needs is one more clean pit stop, 60 minutes of mistake-free driving, and for the turbo-V6-powered 499P to run trouble-free for one more hour – and the greatest prize in endurance sports car racing is Ferrari’s to cherish for generations.

Hirakawa is now settled and running second for Toyota – and Richard Westbrook is third in the #2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R, which is set to take the first overall podium for GM’s luxury marque at Le Mans.

Another team an hour away from the greatest triumph in its history is Inter Europol Competition, the leader in LMP2.

The #34 Oreca 07-Gibson has been leading for much of the race and currently has a 15-second lead. All of the front runners will make one more pit stop before the end of the race.

Fabio Scherer will gut it out with his injured foot and take the green and yellow #34 to the chequered flag in a gladiator-like effort.

Team WRT now has its two cars on the podium – the #41 of Louis Deletraz in second, and coming all the way back from its terrifying off in the rain yesterday evening, Robin Frijns in the #31 has just overtaken the Team Duqueine #30 for third place at the first Mulsanne Chicane!

IDEC Sport’s #48 car was running in third, until Laurents Horr spun out as the result of a left-rear puncture. That’s dropped the #48 to sixth in class.

Panis Racing, which was also hovering around the top five, lost 15 crucial minutes in the garage after a broken starter motor prevented them from leaving the box after the #65’s final stop.
Charlie Eastwood chased down the Iron Dames Porsche, and the pace and experience of the Irish driver and 2020 winner brought the car to within striking distance of the pink Porsche.

Eastwood made light work of passing Rahel Frey into the first Mulsanne Chicane to take second place, as the tangerine Aston Martin Vantage still looks quite second hand with its slightly lifted bonnet. Frey fought back, trying to create a gap to Eastwood’s left, but the Aston Martin driver had it covered.

Nicky Catsburg still leads and will take the #33 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C8.R through to the finish. The race is far from over though and the car will need a final fuel stop. Catsburg’s gap to Eastwood’s Aston Martin is over a minute and a half, a comfortable cushion for everything required to see the car through the final hour should it not find further trouble.

Of the 21 starters in GTE-Am, nine are still classified as runners. Mention should be made of the sterling effort of the #98 Northwest AMR Aston Martin.

Stepping in to fill Paul Dalla Lana’s usual entry, the team has plenty of experience, but this is the team’s first Le Mans. Mechanicals and the challenges of harsh conditions could not phase the efforts of the team and its crew of driver/manager Ian James, Daniel Mancinelli and Alex Riberas who made it through the night, anchoring the car to deliver a solid finish in seventh place, barring further drama.

Equally, Walkenhorst Racing have been the essence of GTE-Am endurance racing with their #100 Ferrari 488 GTE EVO. A plucky effort that stuck with it and never gave up are racing towards a classification of eighth place, two laps off the class lead.

Bringing up the rear in the last ever GTE-Am competition at the 24 Heures du Mans will be the #74 Ferrari of Kessel Racing, which had shown pace and form earlier in the race.

Coming into the last hour the #24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is on track, and NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, rightfully so, has the honour of taking it to the chequered flag – surely, to a thunderous applause.

That’s how things run heading into the last hour of racing, with good conditions. But if there’s one thing that the history of Le Mans has taught us – it is never, ever over until the clock hits zero and the chequered flag flies!

LM24, Hour 23: Toyota’s pursuit wrecked; Corvette looking supreme in GTE

We’re into the final hour at Le Mans and all of a sudden it’s Ferrari’s race to lose. Toyota’s hopes of a sixth straight victory evaporated in the blink of an eye early in the 23rd hour, when Ryo Hirakawa ended up in the barriers at Arnage.

The Japanese driver, newly installed in the No. 8 GR010 for the final two hours, was tasked with catching and passing Antonio Giovanazzi in the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari to claim a comeback victory for the long-dominant Toyota Gazoo Racing team. The gap between them was just 16 seconds when he emerged from the pit lane, but it’s now almost a lap after the incident.

Hirakawa locked the rears under braking into Arnage and veered off into the barriers on the driver’s left, before spinning and clipping the rear of the car in the escape road.

After an agonizing few moments spent turning the car around, Hirakawa brought the car to the pits for emergency service, the rear end damage significant. Toyota’s mechanics managed to complete the stop — which included a front and rear end change — in just two minutes, but that meant the gap grew to over three minutes by the time the car rejoined the race.

Since then, Hirakawa has been unable to make up any ground and is actually at risk of being caught by the No. 51, which will look to put the Toyota a lap down in the final hour.

It was a dramatic moment that had been brewing for a while, and looks likely to have marked the end of Toyota’s challenge, barring any late drama for Ferrari.

There were nerves down at Inter Europol too during the hour, as its LMP2-leading No. 34 ORECA was flagged on the timing screens as under investigation for a pit infringement. Should the team receive a penalty in the final hour, it will almost certainly lose the lead in heartbreaking fashion, as the No. 41 WRT ORECA is only 14 seconds behind, with Louis Delatraz closing in on the injured Fabio Scherer.

To make matters more complicated for the Polish team, should it get the penalty, it may struggle to communicate it to Scherer as the team’s radio communications with the car are reported to be faulty.

GTE Am continues to be led by Corvette Racing, and barring a last-hour drama, it will be another famous victory for the American make. Behind, though, things are far from settled. During the penultimate hour ORT by TF’s Charlie Eastwood caught and passed Rahel Frey in the Iron Dames Porsche for second in class. Since making the move, Eastwood has been pushing to create a gap and has created a healthy 14-second margin heading into the final stint.

The Garage 56 Chevy Camaro ZL1 is powered by the same engine found in the NASCAR Cup series, but with a few modifications to run night and day this weekend in France at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Learn all about it from GM Powertrain leader Russ O’Blenes.
